You have to know your dimensions, especially if you're working with several different social media sites. So you might be a social media manager or you just have your own personal or company accounts on different social media platforms. So for example, Facebook has entirely different sizes than Pinterest, because the concepts of the two are completely different. No matter that the Instagram is owned by Facebook is completely different than Facebook, in spite of what they are trying to do with stories and incorporate different elements like square images, and so on. The basics are completely different because the point of it is completely different. You're using Facebook for one thing, Pinterest for another Instagram for another Twitter for another and so on.
So you have to know your dimensions if you're working with different social media sites. If you're working With just one for example, you just have an Instagram account, then it's important to learn how Instagram dimensions work. So you'll be able to take your images properly and to optimize them properly before uploading. Because as I said in the previous video, it's much easier for you and much more valuable that you personally optimize your images before uploading and not letting their algorithm crop and do it for you. So if you're working with several different sites, or you're just working with one, but you want to know the sizes, that's why we have created this social media cheat sheet. It comes with all these different social media platforms in their sizes.
Now we took all of this, all of these sizes from the official websites, and we are going to keep uploading them as the years go by. So for example, this course is created in 2018 18. So these sizes that you see in this video are for 2018. But if they change it for the next year, and the year after that, we are going to change and upload them as we go and as they change them. So how all of this works if you don't know how to use Photoshop, it's very simple. And I will show you in this video.
So you have a folder right here in what's called a Layers panel. So you can open up the folder by clicking this arrow and all of this will show up, or you can hide the folder by clicking this icon. And as you can see, it's not deleted, it's just hidden from this file. So for example, if we take Facebook in this particular example, I'll open it up and others zoom by holding ALT and scroll wheel on my mouse. If you're using laptop, you can just pinch to zoom or you can use this magnifying tool right here. To zoom in on zoom.
You can click as many times as you want. Now, when we take Facebook for example, we have created our profile image, which is just a basic square image, cover image, Facebook post and Facebook event image, which is if you have your personal event, if you're hosting your personal event, or if you have your Facebook page, and you want the dedicated Facebook event image for it, and I'm gonna, I'm going to show you how you can quickly open them up and adapt one single image to all of these sizes. So to open any of this up, what here we have what's called Smart Objects, which is basically these dimensions are enclosed inside of this Smart Object. You can open and close it as many times as you want, and you can then save it to your desktop directly from there. So we can open up the cover image.
For example, simply double click this icon Right here to open it up. When you edit and save it, it will save back to here you will see it in a second. Or if you want to save it directly for posting, you can simply go right here to the file, Savers, choose your destination, save it as jpg, and there we go. So I'll simply hide this by clicking eyeball icon again. And as you can see, we open the cover image module, open the post, as well hide this go back, open up the event image, hide this go back to the cover image because it's first, and as you can see, these tabs work exactly the same as your browser for example. So I'll click quickly pull one image from my desktop, drag it and drop it inside.
And I'll use the Move tool which is on by default. I'll click this check mark or answer hold Shift and Alt on my keyboard. Left click in One of the corners and then click and drag to increase the size. I'll stop right here, press Enter. And now as you can see, we have the image in the center, but we have the different background color. We'll we're going to fix that by right clicking on this layer, choosing rasterized layer.
And then you can use this, which is a rectangular marquee tool, click it, it's the same thing as on your desktop. So simply left click right here, and drag, make this selection and then hold Shift F five. Now this dialog will pop up. Perhaps for you, it will show foreground color, but it's important for you to click there and choose content aware. What that will do is it will include the content inside of this space, a content from the image. So just press ok Photoshop, hold It's magic.
And as you can see, it filled that space, we're going to do exactly the same thing right here. So using Rectangular Marquee to make a selection, it doesn't have to be entire selection. So for example, if your image is lacking just this part, you will just select that part and so on. But we're going to select this part, shift f5. Press OK, it will fill. And when you're done, it will look like this.
So let's go in, let's move on to the Facebook post. Once again, drag and drop your image, position it inside, it's already selected. You can then hold Shift Alt, click in one of the corners, drag to increase its size. We can drag this one even more to position it like so or you can choose to do it like this. But because we increase the size in the previous one, we can do it like so you can move it down by pressing your down arrow on your keyboard, up, left to right. And you can hold Shift to 900 by 10 pixels.
Press Enter or Return when you're done. And finally, let's do it for this event image, drag and drop, same techniques. So Shift Alt left click increase the size, Press Center, shift and then right arrow to nudge it. And that's it. Now we have three different sizes for this same image. Now let's save it back to here.
Click and then press Ctrl S, and it will save it back here. And as you can see, we can then save this overall file and come back to it and then edit this image, replace it with another image and so on. So cover image is done. Press this to close, come to the Facebook post Ctrl S or Command S if you're on a Mac. It says right here. Close it, come back control us.
And as you can see, we now have three different images that we can use for Facebook. Now we can do exactly the same thing with profile image. So double click right here. If this is your product, for example, simply Shift Alt and left click increase the size, do it like so press Enter Ctrl S, come back. And here we go. Now, we have completed the Facebook.
But now how we are going to save these images to our desktop so we can upload them later and use them. So to save them to your specific folder and have them ready for the for upload. simply double click right here. Open all of them. Come back and double click again. And then go right here to the File, Save as a locate to the folder.
Click right here to choose the format to choose JPG in this example, you already have the name profile image. So that's handy. Click Save, and then click OK. Go back to the cover image file Savers, do exactly the same thing. So dimensions to JPEG save presenter, go here, File, Save As, go right here, JPEG, save, Enter. And finally, File, Save, as I mentioned, JPEG, save. And that's it.
You can also save it to using some different formats. So for example, clicking right here, you have all of these formats. And now I'm using a slightly older version of Photoshop in this course. But if you have a new one, there's maybe two or three different dimensions, different file formats here, but two of the most important are JPEG And PNG. png is for images who don't have the background. So they need to be without a background on some of these websites, but JPEGs are the ones who are usually going to use.
Now you also have GIF. But if you're not working with images who are moving and who are not static, then you will not be using gifts. So basically, majority of the time you will be working with JPEG images. Now that we save all of them, you can simply close all of them from here. And to save this overall file, and to use it some time again in your work. Go to the File savers.
Choose exactly the same format, sorry, exactly the same folder and just save it as Photoshop PSD. So as this basic format, click Save. This dialog will pop up simply Press OK. And that's it. So now the next time, when you go back and open up this file, you will still have these images inside. Now, let me finally show you for these different social media sizes. So let's use Instagram for example.
Let's look at the image once again. So Instagram post and open Instagram story. So you can just see how it looks like on different sizes. Drag and drop this image, Shift Alt left click increase its size, press OK. And then do the same for the Instagram story, size. And now I'm going to show you that trick once again. So presenter hide this text, right click rasterize layer, and then choose rectangle marquee to do it like so shift f5, press OK. And do the same for the bottom part.
So shift f5 press OK. And that's it. You have your Instagram story Ctrl S to save it back and your Instagram posts Ctrl S to save it back and you can see how they look like. So as you can see, using the social media cheat sheet is extremely easy to adapt your images to different social media sizes, have them ready for the upload by saving them directly from here to your desktop and your dedicated folder and come pre prepared for the different social media sites because you now know all the different social media sizes and we got your back because we're going to update these images. Sorry this social media cheat sheet in the future. So you will always be on top of the game when it comes to social media sizes.
