The next video that you'll see is the BLS video. This is where you're going to have a skills check off on your BLS or basic life support skills. So remember your five steps, the first step is always seen safety. Second step, checking for responsiveness. Third step, activating an emergency response system 911 defibrillator ad for step, checking for a pulse and breathing at the same time for at least five seconds but no longer than 10 seconds. And if there's no pulse and they're not breathing, we want to start doing CPR.
Simply to hands over the chest, locking your arms and using your body as a fulcrum to do the CPR, or compression to ventilation ratio is always 30 to two starting with 30 chest compressions followed by two breaths and we want to push hard and fast. It's going to be a rate of at least 100 to 120 beats per minute allowing the chest to fully record So the heart has a chance to fill back up with blood. And then we go right back into those chest compressions. Our goal is to push at least two inches down on the chest. And again allowing for that full chest recoil 30 to two. We aren't going to get tired during this.
So it's recommended through the American Heart Association that we switch the provider on the chest every two minutes just so we can do high quality CPR. Another thing to consider, especially if you're out in public is using an ACD stands for automated external defibrillator. It's basically a device that has a computer in it that can detect a cardiac arrest rhythm. They only detect I'm only trained to detect v fib impulses v TAC. So ad DS, they are made for public use, so they don't know that you're a medical professional. So they're going to be a bit slower than what you'd like them to be.
But just remember the first step in operating an ad is to do what? Turn it on. Once you turn it on. It'll tell you what to do and when to do it in the order that it needs to be done. There's no reason To get ahead of the ad, it will talk you through it and just follow what it says to do. And keep in mind that the ad will automatically stop every two minutes and check that patient again to see if it's a shockable rhythm.
So follow the instructions of the ad, and you'll do very well on this course.
