Welcome back. It's Adam shore the heart guy. And in the last video we looked at how to face your fears. And in this video, we're going to look at optimism and how you can be more optimistic. Now when I started researching my book, the lunatic gene, a lot of chapters that I didn't put in the first incident, but one of them was I used to I research luck. Now, my dad always said to me, he said, Listen, son, if a genie ever comes out of a lamp and gives you one wish, always ask to be lucky.
And that's sort of stuck with me because I do believe I've been quite lucky in my life, and I believe I'm a lucky person. So when I started looking into luck to see if there was any research out there, I was fascinated to find a studies by a guy called Dr. Richard Wiseman, who studied luck is all sorts of Interesting things that he found. There's one study that sort of stuck out to me when I did research this and found that he asked people whether they thought they were lucky or not. So he had the two groups and he made them reach through this broadsheet newspaper and count how many pictures were in it. So everybody went through this paper. Now on a half page spread on one of the pages, was a message saying, ask the person who gave you this newspaper, or some money, I can't remember the exact amount I think it's about 250 pounds.
Important he found was that the people that thought they were lucky, were all tending to find this thing and read it and ask for the money. And the people that weren't lucky, were not. So what he was finding was this link between people believing that they're lucky, and people that don't believe that they're lucky Now what we're going to talk about today, or in this particular module is something called the reticular activating system. Now, our brain can only process a certain amount of information, we're always deleting, we're distorting, and we're generalizing a lot filling in the gaps. If you want an example of this, if you've ever been to a football game, or a sports game, and there could be 100,000 people in that stadium, and then you talk about it with other people that are there, and they seem to have seen a completely different game, they seem to love you viewed it through a different lens.
That's because we're always deleting, distorting and generalizing to suit with our own agenda. So that's something that we look at the reticular activating system. Now let's do an exercise now, that can show you how your reticular activating system works. I want you as this video is playing now, I want you to look around the room. And notice all of the red things that you can see in the room. Do it as we talk, as Okay, just take a few seconds.
Now, notice all of the red things. Now I want you to close your eyes. Now, if your eyes are closed and do this properly, I want you to tell me now, how many green things you can remember from that. And you're probably thinking, but that's not fair. Adam, I was looking for the read things. Well, it's the same in life.
It's not just the things that we focus on. Everything's out there. Ways to change our life, ways to be more positive people to connect with positive incidents, Lucky features, they're all out there, but we get what we focus more on. If you spend your life Looking for problems or reasons to perpetuate this story about how unlucky you are, how bad how how things don't always go your way, how life has a conspiracy against you, then you will attract things to make your reality true. And it doesn't matter whether you're looking for luck for love, you might be looking for your soulmate. If you're if you're looking for for money wise to attract it in your life, if you're looking for reasons why you can't get a job, your reticular activating system will start focusing on only the things that bring your current reality, your psychology into reality and justify your position.
So what I want you to do now is take some time and write down the five words that describe you the most right now. And you might want to take another five things if then The same essay, what are the five things I most want to attract in my life? Take some time to do that now. Okay, if you've done the exercise, then you'll, you'll already start to open your awareness. Now what we're going to talk about out now is how our thinking affects what happens to us in the world. Again, when I run group workshops, one of the questions I asked them, coaches, a lot of people complain to me that bad things happen to them, you know, an abnormal amount of bad things, or people are saying bad things about them, or stuff that they don't like that I hear about.
They start complaining about it. They start saying, Why me? What have I done to deserve this? Here's an exercise to get everyone to do. Just imagine that your thoughts are boomerangs. So you're gonna throw out thoughts there.
Now if somebody knew exactly what you were thinking? And was writing this down? And if they knew what you were saying, so everything you say or think has been written down, would you be happy at the end of every day for those messages and thoughts to be delivered to the people that you were thinking or talking to him about? Now, a few people have put their their hands up to that very few people. And when I challenged them over it, it turns out that they're at a point in their life where they just don't care about anything. Or they think they don't, or they just lying.
There are not many people who would like every thought that they have, and every everything that they've said, to go to the person that you're thinking or speaking about. And this is like a boomerang. So if I'm complaining about somebody, or I'm angry about somebody, or something's not going my way, I throw out that thought. And what happens is how the universe works because I'm thinking in this so it will come back at some stage and hit me on the back of the head. And I won't even see it coming. And it's probably not from the person that I've through the angry thought that.
And then there's the danger thing, or why did this happened to me? I putting all this stuff out there. That's not very nice about other stuff, other people. If I'm doing that, then of course, stuff is going to come back at me. And this isn't to say that we're going to have all good thoughts all the time. Now, of course, I still have thoughts about other people that aren't particularly good.
And this is same thing with resilience. How long do I stay in the zone of life isn't very fair to me. We're looking to reduce that time period. This is how we build our resilience. And a lot of it comes from responsible thinking and speaking. If I want to throw out angry stuff, then angry stuff is going to come back at me, if I want to be depress or upset, I'm gonna attract depressed or upset people into my life.
But if I decide I want to be happier, and I'm going to put out positive things, and I'm going to learn from everything that happens to me, and I start throwing that out, then better stuffs gonna come back at me. Now, it doesn't mean that the bad stuff isn't gonna come. But it does mean that because I'm in a zone, I'm feeling better about myself. I've created my energetic barrier. And I know that most people are saying that mean things about me are actually talking about themselves. I'm feeling more resilient.
I'm feeling better about myself. I'm more immune to what everybody else has to say. I know that I'm making a positive difference in people's life. I'm smiling more. And here's another thing for anybody that knows people with low energy with low mood, that's even in the depression zone. Smiling is your body's natural feel good drug Every time you smile, even a full smile, it starts to release serotonin in your body, you start to feel better naturally.
While this video is playing, sit there or stand there, whatever you're doing with a smile on your face right now. And you will notice even a false smile Even if you're in a bad mood you go. Even a full smile, you're you fool your brain into releasing serotonin. So you It's impossible to sit there with a big smile on your face and feel depressed over a period of time. I found a research study in Canada once very obscure one that said that the average four year old smiles 400 times a day to die. And the average adult It was about 14 and you wonder why so many people are on antidepressants.
It's because we've forgotten to smile. We lost our neck Feel good drug. People are replacing it with all sorts of other drugs to try and get the fix and get the next height man. When smiling is the most natural way to feel better to build your resilience, you want to feel more resilient watch comedy, is characters. Like I studied again, a phenomenon about smiling. I looked up a chap called Norman Cousins.
He had a crippling ankylosing spondylitis. He was in pain every day to the point he couldn't even sleep. And he found watching his favorite comedies and inducing a belly laugh or die was a far better analgesic than any drug that he was given by the hospital. Smiling comedy focus on positive things, setting our reticular activating system to attract better things. How can my life be better who's Life can i positively influence to die? I'm throwing out good things.
What's the positive to come from this? What a great act of kindness can I do to somebody to make a difference in their life today? watch the film, pay it forward, if you want inspiration on that front, things that uplift our body, things that uplift our mind. Things that uplift our soul are all good for us. And smiling is the route in to that zone to play in a more productive place. So on that note, I want you to go out, have more fun, connect with more people.
And in the next lesson, we'll look at how you can start believing in yourself better
