Coping wasn't a magic bullet
The first 10 years of the development of Birthing Better skills were focused entirely on coping with the naturally occurring pain of labor because the vast majority of us labored and had a vaginal birth. A Caesarean was only done if a woman's life was in danger. Remember there was almost no birth control back then.
Back then there was only a 4.5% Cesarean rate. That meant 95% of us labored whether for hours or days and whether we had a good outcome or not. Modern obstetrics had just become a specialist service in the mid1950s. Everyone knew women 'suffered' in childbirth and that there were many 'issues/risks' that could become 'problems'. Diagnostic and treatment tools were not very sophisticated back then. There was no treatment for RhNegative etc.
Without medical care, all births are natural and normal and that means. whatever happens may or could happen. Even with good birthing skills, we discovered that many of us still have long 1st and 2nd Stages of labor and delivery. By coping, managing, working through, dealing with, handling, stay on top of, and feel in control throughout our baby's birth. we stopped 'suffering'.Â
Birthing Better families then shifted to skills to prepare our pregnant body to birth. Fathers were paramount in developing skills to prepare the body for birth. Men easily figured out what birth is about an exercise in plumbing. A big object has to come down, through and out a container ... our pregnant body. Work together. Believe it or not, doing these skills have a wow element. Who knew our bodies can do these things?Â
