As beginners or vocalists without any prior vocal training, we do not have a lot of control over our vocal cords and as such, it may be difficult to try and move through our 3 vocal registers with ease. We utilize a vocal technique called lip rolls that frees up the vocal cords putting no strain or pressure on them, allowing us to concentrate on the notes we need to hit, while not worrying about straining or hurting ourselves. This exercise technique is one of the best exercises for freeing up the voice, creating, and increasing flexibility. It is used by beginners and advanced vocalists alike. For beginners or vocalists without prior vocal training, it is a must in order to free up the voice, learning to control the vocal cords. However, all level vocalists should practice lip rolls over an exercise until it is very comfortable because, it is an easy way to learn difficult melodies, phrases, and passages in a song where we would otherwise strain or hurt our voice, by trying to jump between intervals we are not used to using our full voice. Note - Lip rolls over an advanced exercise at fast tempos help in smoothing out the voice increasing flexibility. Lip rolls at fast tempos over a beginner exercise are great warm-up exercises.
