This lesson is called find your focus when people tell me they do all of that plus whatever comes their way for business, or do I wonder about their level of commitment? Have you ever been at a networking event? Now someone about what he or she does? Answer is likely Yes, because I've asked many people about their businesses at many events. I'm quite amazed by the total range of services that some people offer in the public, and nothing seems to be related at all. This practice is not unusual for many small businesses, but I begin to wonder what their focus is.
And I also wonder what their expertise can possibly be. Most of the time people don't realize what they're doing by offering too much. It is not good for their business. Can you Imagine doing business with someone who does your photocopying. Gives talks about leadership and shines your shoes. This may be called a one stop shop for what does the customer expect to gain from this type of relationship?
I would certainly be leery about spending my dollars with that business. In reality, it is likely the person doing the selling is apt to do anything just to get business. I know they attend every networking event possible, and spray and pray dragging along some unsuspecting soul to gain business relationship. Does the unsuspecting soul have any idea they are seeing entirely different by other perspective businesses at the same event? It can be so confusing for everyone. For example, I know a person who claims to do sales training also teaches business how to market their products.
Her claim seems quite innocent until you dig a little deeper and find out her real expertise is in sales and marketing. To wildly different fields in most people's mind. However, to continue the story, this person also offers leadership training, change management, consulting, writing skills, and the list goes on. She purports to be a professional speaker who will talk on any subject you give her. Hmm, I think it's time for her to focus on our true expertise. When you move from spray and pray to a more focused approach, it is much easier to work with potential customers, you are moving from the perception of no expertise into a person who has something valuable to offer.
Having focus gives you the ability to define your services and products in a more targeted manner. Plus, as an added bonus focus will enable you to determine your best customer according to your true expertise. With focus you attract the one type of audience you want your target customer alert the road to nowhere. If you sell different products that are unrelated or have multiple businesses, you must only concentrate on one networking event, whichever one is more targeted to the group you are attending. Targeting in networking is a smart idea. And it's a great way to market your business.
Here's the first step to effective networking and one of the most that most people never get past. For every type of marketing or advertising you do. You must have a plan. And the reason for doing that plan is simple. You want to get more business. You want to form more relationships.
And you want to get the most out of the networking of events where you are attending. So what will it take to concentrate on only one thing? It takes effort. Think about the event where you're attending, go there know what your target audience is, know what they purchase, because that is exactly what you want to be there for. And that is the only component that you want to be able to sell here. So what's in your cardholder?
How many cards are you really carrying? When it comes to focus, you need only think of one for the event you are attending. Without focus. People will not tune in to you. They're only thinking of themselves and what they need to hand out one of several different cards from your card holder, who are not likely to get any follow up meetings. Why Sometimes you will get the right card immediately.
Other times, you will be fumbling around. We all do more than one thing. We all have work. We have our own business, we have our volunteer time. If you need more than one card, then it is time to take a look at how you can better focus and get what you want from the event. So what is important to your business?
Let's take a look close look at your cardholder. How many cards are really in there? Do you use a tagline? Here's my story. I'm an author, speaker and small business consultant. My own organization is called Virtual group consulting International, very vague, but I sell my consulting services here.
Under this company I have several lines of business, not businesses but lines of business. The first of which is a publishing center called blueprint books. This company sells my publications, and those that the authors I connect with. Second, I have blueprints for success. This is my book series. And this is a brand that promotes my books and my training components.
Third, I have vital health review. I am very interested in health and wellness on a personal level. So my dilemma is to figure out which one I will use with each event that I attended. Now, it may sound like I'm a bit unfocused, but in reality everything ties together well, at least in my mind. I use my virtual card everywhere I go. This way, I can use a tagline to expand offerings without looking unfocused.
I use the one card to orchestrate my conversations to fit the topic. So what's in my card holder, one card with a great tagline web info and contact information. More on business cards later. So let's cut to the core and win some business. Even if you have ever been to an event where people keep thrusting their cards in your face, do you find it is usually those people that are recruiting for one reason or another? They don't understand that you are there to do business for yourself and not for them.
Ugh, I hate networking when I don't get anywhere and people bug me about buying from them. So don't make it a conquest. Do you not think that every person at the event is not thinking the same thing? So what can you do about it? Nothing when it comes to controlling others at the event, but everything when it comes to you controlling what you do. Don't make it a conquest.
When you arrive at the door. Open it up, see what's going on. Run around without Focus, and then get back to work. We will talk about how to find events and what you should be focusing on. So you should know things like what is your core business? What brings you food, shelter and clothing.
Remember, you are in business to make money and you are at the event to find ways that get money. You may or may not be surprised at the fact that focus will actually bring you more business. You see, it comes down to this people talk about other people, some call it gossip. And if you aren't focused on your core business, then when they talk about you and they will, they only have one subject, the expert in networking In my case, let them talk but for the right reasons. Figure out your core business and concentrate their people who are at attach to your core business are also more than likely to buy your other products and services later, want money and cut to the core ideas to remember, we covered a number of things in this lesson. So here's some of the ideas to remember.
We've covered alert, the road to nowhere, how to focus, try to be one thing when you go to the networking events. Without focused people will become confused as to your expertise. Focus is one of the keys to business success.
