In this section, we are going to cover the workflow of creating more complex illustrations by doing these three on a hill drawing project. In this current lesson, we will cover the macro overview of what we are going to do in this project. There are at least two differences of this project compared to the previous Skoll project. First, we now have different color agents to work with. And second, we have multi composition layers, which are a background and a mid ground, although there aren't any objects in the background yet but we will still discuss the possibilities towards that. Okay, so the overall process goes like this.
The first phase is finding reference images or photos and then place them in our canvas. Next is sketching. Sketching process is where we draw rough drawing with pencil. Brush tool to block out initial ideas. This is where the actual drawing take place. The next process is layer sorting.
This is where we determine which objects in a drawing belong to each composition group. Commonly, there are three composition groups, bare ground, mid ground, and foreground. But you can really add or reduce these composition groups as needed. The next process is base coloring. In this process, we will add the base color for all of the objects in our illustration. The next process is editing local shading are also known as ambient occlusion pass.
For these we create another dedicated layer positioned above the base color layer. This is where we add subtle shadows on corners or crevices and also on context surfaces. Next is global shading or just For short, we can create a new dedicated layer for nice or just use the existing local shading layer. In his face, we will add more larger shadows and also cast shadows, cast shadows or shadows that are being tested from one object onto another object. The next phase is highlights. This is the process where we add highlight or specular colors on glossy surfaces.
We need to create a new dedicated layer for these highlight colors. The next process is adding details or textures. Now for this process, you can create a new layer or you can also simply reuse the base color layer. In this process, we can add color variations, textures, grout, scratches, small bumps and holes, etc. And that's it. Our basic digital painting walkthrough You can add more and more layers to add details and colors to the illustration as you like.
But this workflow will be enough as the foundation for us to develop further to create any type of illustrations we can think of. In the next lesson, we are going to start our three on a cliff illustration by placing reference images in a canvas
