Modifying my goals allowed me to stay true to myself
I returned to my teaching job a year and a half after my brain surgery. I couldn't walk well or talk well. My energy and stamina were not sufficient to support 3 lectures per week, let alone walk around a classroom for a 3-hour lab. Since being a biology professor is part of my identity, I had to find a way to go back given my limitations. So, I modified my goals a bit by teaching primarily online, still focusing on marine life that I've always loved.
