Continuing along the right hand panel in the library module, I'd like to have a look at the metadata tab. So metadata is something very important to the entire Lightroom workflow. It's really at the foundation of everything that happens. So metadata literally means data about data. It's all that extra information that we have access to about the main information, which is of course, the the photos. So an example of metadata here is the camera information.

So it's called the Exif metadata. You can see I've got all these different metadata as we can look at so the x F is the electronic exchange image format metadata, and it's all the camera information that was automatically saved by the camera at the time the photo was taken. So you can see here this photo was taken on the 27th of April 2017 and an eighth of a second if 2.8 70 mil focal length Aperture Priority 3200 So and so forth, whereas this one here, one, three 20th of a second that fit 70, mil, hundred, ISO, Nikon, d 800, and so forth. So, all this Exif information Exif is automatically saved by the camera with the file and Lightroom can read it Lightroom can access it, and we can use it to search on to filter on and so forth. So metadata is a wonderful thing.

Now, there's another metadata field here of interest. It's called the iptc. And that is the international press telecommunications Council. That's certainly a mouthful, isn't it? So when we go to here, you'll see we've got all this information that I've entered myself about my with my name, my postal address, my email address, my web address. I've even added a description of this image here, a traditional Japanese wedding just here.

Whereas if we go to some other images here, I think we've got Osaka Castle just here, and I'm able to enter all that information as well. So this is another example Have metadata and there's lots of different examples of metadata as you'll see throughout this journey. But certainly these two, the iptc, and the Exif, some of the most important ones to have a look at. So I want to show you how we can create our own little metadata templates as well because for applying this information, such as the other contact information, so if we go you can see there's a preset menu here. And I've applied my David heterodyne photography preset. So if I go into Edit presets, you can see this is where I can do exactly that.

If I go David paradigm photography, then you'll see all the information that I've included in my preset just here, my copyright statement, my name, postal address, email address, and so forth. A lot of this other information is not particularly necessary to me. Certainly if you are supplying images to various countries have perhaps publishes or image banks or different sort of organizations, they may require different metadata that you can include there. But certainly the copyright and the Creator is just some of the most basic stuff that you can create there for your own purposes. So you would go ahead and you would type your name, address and whatever information you wanted to include in there. And you could go in here and you could say Save Current settings as a new preset, and then you'd have your little preset that you could very easily apply to a whole folder of images or even during import.

So let me illustrate that now. I'm just going to go over to my Prague folder, become a stump folder here, the Prague folder, and you can see that the Prague folder currently has no contents or contact information rather about the, the creator. So I'm going to click on any image here. I'm going to go Command A to select all. So now they're all selected. And I'm going to go into my preset here and I'm going to choose David Howard on photography.

Be sent out asks me, do you want to apply this preset to all the images? I'm going to say yes, all the images. And now all that information has been nicely applied there. So very quick and easy way to just go ahead and apply all your contact information, your metadata information. And all that information can be kept with the images when you export them, send them off to clients, or whoever you may be sending them to. In fact, when you export, you'll see and I'll just give you a quick, a quick little preview of the export dialog here.

If I just go File and export. You'll see all the way down here in the metadata field. You've actually got a choice what you include in the exported file. Do you include just your copyright statement? Do you include your copyright and contact information? Do you include all the metadata except the camera information, or do you include all the metadata?

So you've got four different choices from a minimal amount? Inclusion to a maximum inclusion. And that's that all that will be viewable at the other end when someone receives the file. So that's some of the information that you can control in your metadata tab, we can add contact details and of course the EXIF data is automatically saved by the camera so that's a wonderful thing. So whether you engage with the metadata or not, it is there and it is working and it helps Lightroom working credibly efficiently.
