Hey everyone, welcome to this lecture. What is tack time? Before I get into the details of tack time? I want to share an analgesic. Have you seen all of the Marvel Avengers movies? You must be wondering what has Avengers got to do with that of TAC time, you will come to know in just a few moments coming back.

I'm a vivid fan of superhero movies, and almost all of the Avenger movies are my favorite. One striking thing that I personally like about these movies is the way its directors have ensured each character is given the right balance of screen time. There are so many stars and superheroes that it is easy for the director to get swayed and make one or two of those the key pivotal characters. However, it doesn't do that. What the movie does is a Exceptional, it just gives almost equal screen time, and maintains the right balance for each superhero in the movie. Likewise, the popular TV series friends, as you all know, friends had six key characters, and the dialogue writers ensured.

Each character had equal number of dialogues in each episode, one fact explains that they used to create a pie chart of the number of dialogues of each of your favorite characters and keep each pie level. Interesting, isn't it? What would happen if any of the superhero or any of the friends cast was given more screen time? These favorite series may possibly not have been so popular as they are today. Right could be a similar thing occurs in any manufacturing or service operations. Make one particular department extract efficient and it can actually burry other departments in excess inventory and paperwork and slow them down making a mess of things.

So, there is a need to coordinate the activities. How would you know how fast the production process should be? How should the capacity of each equipment be? How many people do you need? The answer to all these questions is calculation of tack time. tack time is a German word for rhythm or meter.

Tact is the rate of customer demand. The rate at which the customer is buying product. If we are working eight hours and 30 minutes per day, that is 510 minutes for 20 days a month and the customer is buying 20,500 units per month. Then you should be making 1020 units per day or one unit every 30 seconds. Every step of the process should be producing a part every 30 seconds. How will you get this number, just hold on have patience.

We will cover this part very soon. With this initial understanding of what is tack time, it is now important to understand why use tack time calculations. In the previous example that you observed if the production staff goes faster, they will over produce if they are going slower, they will create bottlenecks. tack can be used to set the pace of production and alert workers whenever they are getting ahead or behind. When should tack time be used? tack time is most easily applied in repetitive manufacturing and service operations.

It can be extended to any repeatable process in which the steps can be written out and waste identified and eliminated to create a better flow. It is easy easiest to apply tack time in relatively high volume service operations in which there is some consistency in the cycle time per unit. A classic example is transport Security Administration responsible for security checks and procedures at all airports in the United States. They can identify the footfall of customers in the airport at any particular point in time and accordingly staff their team, they can additionally relax or tighten their security to ensure passengers are able to meet their aircraft departure times. With that, we come to the end of this lecture. Thank you for attending.

See you in the next one.
