So let's talk about the things that you should be doing and the things that you should avoid when thinking about naming your product or your app or your website. So number one, you should definitely keep it really simple. And let's look at some examples. Gmail, well, what does that stand for Google Mail, right? They do overthink the process and the naming of it. Good go, right, good company.

It's a web app that helps you build a better company, a good company. Again, they've played around with the domain name. It's really simple. Your American Red Cross, right? You know what it stands for, and the branding really helps with the logo and everything. Again, really, really simple.

Puma, you would associate a puma with sort of speed and agility, and their name just sort of is just that it's not a puma. Athletic. It's not sort of anything complicated. It is Very simple. And obviously, apple, even though it doesn't have anything to do with computers, it was named Apple computers in the beginning. But then sort of the naming of the branding have sort of evolved.

So you don't really need to have the computers and the and people just sort of notice it and they know what it stands for. But Apple is it's simple. And their products are simple. You should be very specific when you're naming your app or product or website, quick office for Android, and just right off the bat, and this is what we're actually talking about. People know what you're selling just from the name. So you know, it's for Android.

So it's not for iPhone. It's not for something on the on the web, right? And it's an office Wait, why? Because it's right there in the name. So you expect to have the ability to add in Docs and Excel and PowerPoint and things like that. And it's quick or other it's a name, but you get the implication that it's faster.

And it's quick and it's for Android. So right in the name, people know what you're selling, there is no need for a slogan or tagline or description, or an explanation. People know what you are selling. And this is exactly this the point of this entire course. The next one, I Heart Radio. So if you do love radio, you will be using this app, presumably, it's not called I enjoy music.

Sometimes it's very specific about what it does and who for 100 pushups. And this might seem sort of a bit too simple. If we're looking at the the actual name. It's a product. It's a combination, I believe on an app web app and an application on your phone, which helps you get to do 100 pushups in a matter of a month. And so So this is you might think of it as too simple or I could have followed by there is no sort of big thinking process behind it.

But that's that's the point that you shouldn't really spend all this time thinking about a name if your app does this, why not name it for what the benefits that it brings the audience right. So we're thinking about how to name our product now in 60 minutes and this is one of the results that you could have very simple very straightforward, very specific. You should make it easy to pronounce for people if you're building sort of a name that is a compounding or if you just follow something just make it easy easy for people to actually remember and pronounce it so gap it I don't know any other way to pronounce it. It's not gay give up is not there's no accent there's no other way have actually sang it. Ben and Jerry's and sure you could argue that it's called maybe something else in different language you could call the Jerry's the URIs or something like that, which it's very simple.

It's easy to pronounce, especially the Ben. I don't know another way to call Ben to read Trello Trello is is a great app for product management or project management. And again Trello it's easy to say you the way you read it is actually the way you say it. So it's there's no confusion there. Number four, you should make your your name meaningful. That means that there should be some some for processing to what we're actually doing and what are the benefits and for what audience so I love this name Five Guys, burgers and fries.

I like the first thing I like is the fact that it rhymes right guys prize. And he talks about the history And the brand itself, right what they do. So there's, it's a family, there's five people involved, and they do burgers and fries. I mean, again, if the name actually sells the product, you know what they're selling right off the bat and sure that they probably sell ice cream and other things. It's a fast food place. But the basics are burgers and fries.

And it's simple, why not make it meaningful? Right off the bat from from the name amazon.com. This works better if you're if you look at the logo, so there's a there's an arrow from the A to the Z. And this is basically the implication that they pretty much have everything right, they could buy pretty much anything on there. And sort of the name the the Amazon is a pretty big place. So again, you would, the moment you hear it, even though you know nothing about it, and the moment you see the logo, you can sort of get an idea of what they actually do.

The ring, the ring is a magazine and website are all about boxing. And sure, the ring could have a different meaning, right they have multiple meanings. But in this case and the branding again the logo really helps with the way that it looks right the the shape of VR sort of forms this the beginning of a circle, and you will know that the from the name right, it is all about a boxing. Number five, the last thing that you should actually do and think about as an important thing is be authentic. So if you are giving things out for free, you should maybe have your app. Say that right right off the bat.

You should try to avoid being being sort of a scammy like $3 not calm If you're not actually giving away free dollars or, or having some sort of a service or a network where you would provide that service, so the dollar store, well, it's a store and stuff in it costs $1. So why not call it dollars and they've added the great Canadian beforehand to sort of differentiate itself for from other similar type of stores. The next one last pass, and this works on a This works by itself, but it also works better when you have a tagline or the slogan of it, which will be, this is the last pass you will ever need to memorize or to know. So in my experience using the product, it's a password management app. It has been through like then what they're saying is it was true, I only needed to remember this this password and all my passwords were synced or auto completed or fill in things.

Like that. So yeah, it worked. And they were being authentic about how the product impacted people's lives. All recipes calm, even though they do not have all the recipes in the wall and probably will never have all the recipes in the world. Their mission is to gather all of the recipes in one place. So they're being authentic with their mission.

So let's focus on some things that you should not be doing when when naming your product or your rapper website. So number one would be don't focus on foreign meanings yet, or foreign meanings of the words are the main things like that. One of the cases when theory came out, right, it was called Shiri in Japanese, which meant as this was sort of a big deal when it came up. It sort of was not really true. It was more of an internet your urban legend The fact was that they were not really pushing for the for the name Siri in Japan or Asian markets and they were not actually translating it with was just it's supposed to be read as Siri so there was not really a problem there. The Chevy Nova a car which in Spanish no varmints doesn't go so that would have meant that oh people wouldn't buy because of this name and people would associate it with with this but again another legend it wasn't really such a big deal in in those foreign markets.

Especially since people don't really dedicate or take things apart. They would see it as as an OVA I as a as a name right? They wouldn't really think about the the meaning of it. So you shouldn't focus on four meanings yet. Especially if you're just starting off with with name your product lines. It's something small and private.

Maybe There is no reason to focus on this yet to focus your time and your energy and your and your money, perhaps you should really focus on your product being a great product for people and bring benefits to them to their lives and having excellent customer service. Number two, we talked about you, you should being very specific with your name, but it shouldn't get too specific. So these are some examples of cases where I think being too specific sort of hurts them in the long run. So this is cheap SSL security, where you can get an SSL security certificate, and it's cheap. So they have sort of deals with partners do you get it cheaper? The problem here is that it doesn't really allow them to grow any further.

So if they would have maybe some deals on antivirus or anti malware, they wouldn't really be able to package them themselves. Their domain name is cheap SSL security. So I would have liked it if they would have sort of tried to have it a bit more generic so they could grow. And again, the same applies to no book review. Even though for SEO purposes, this is a great idea. I feel like they're boxing themselves in into a corner.

And they're part of a bigger network. The bigger network has websites like laptop review, and then smartphone review. I would have liked more if it was just a bundle of all these websites, and you would have a brand name for all of them. Then the notebook or laptop or smartphone would just be a category category in in that bigger website, Android app review, again, very specific. Perhaps it's great for SEO purposes. But what it what it does is it boxes themselves in because if they want to do Perhaps Android apps or blackberry apps or iPhone apps review, they can't really do it with this domain.

They can't really have Android apps review comm slash iPhone, it doesn't really make sense. So, again, it would have helped they would have maybe app review or mobile apps review or just have a brand name in itself. Number three, don't really, you shouldn't really forget about the wording right. Just you should take a few minutes now just a few minutes to think about how the words really coupled together, or how the domain name really works. So this is an example of a technology company and they have a service there, which also was the name of the domain, which is it scrap? Right?

So it's about recycling. But the problem with height is crap is it could it could also be Reddit, it's crap. So you don't want this to be associated with your company. Another one is Teachers talking. And this is a place where teachers go and they gain additional knowledge. The problem with this sort of name or domain name is it could also be read as teachers talking, which again, don't want this associated with your name or your product or your app.

So you could add a dash to it or you could just sort of word it differently so you wouldn't have problems with it. Number four, you're shouldn't shouldn't be provocative for no reason. Adam and Eve is a company that sells adult products and toys. And so the name Adam and Eve is provided, but it is because they are selling a specific type of product so it does work for them. On the other side, there's this app that ended up being banned, which was called the shopped mega Fox app. And so this will this was banned for partial nudity in the app itself.

Just trying to be provocative to get Like downloads and people to the to actually look at your app is not really a great idea when you're when you're naming your app, right? You could have it as, as I make it, Megan Fox and things like that. So I don't really I don't really suggest you being provocative if your company doesn't actually do that thing. Number five, and the last one, you shouldn't rely on fads, then then there's an asterisks. Unless that is the whole point. So fads are things that are fleeting, right?

There's maybe something that is going on worldwide, like the two k right when the year 2000 came along, and there were all these apps and websites and articles and things like that. But guess what, like that sort of went away. You couldn't call it two k security. The next year like it didn't really make sense for people and another great example is the World Cup 2014 in Brazil, All right, people calling in or integrating World Cup in Brazil and things like that in their app name and even added US had something of that sort. But then about a year later, or even maybe a week or a month later after World Cup, no one will will actually remember it or care about it. So if you're naming an app that you want it to last, for for years and years to come, don't rely on fat.

So this was the whole video about the intro of this entire course. And go ahead and skip to the next video and we'll be talking about the history of some of your favorite and some of the famous names in the world.
