The next style of lids that we're going to talk about our lids with flanges, and lenses with flanges, they're a lot of fun because they open up a lot of possibilities in the base form on what you're going to put them on. I have three again, very simple shapes down here so I can show you the different feel that these lids can create on them. But the idea with the flange on the lid, again, it's I can really go on pretty much any shape. I'm just gonna throw a little cylinder here, but this could be a neck to a taller bottle, it could be rounded, it could be really any shape you want. And maybe we'll just go ahead and put a little little belly in here. That's my work.
So the great thing about these flanges on the lid is that they're going to fit inside of the piece. So even if you had a smaller piece like this or a great big bottle, the lid could have a nice overhang come right to the edge, it doesn't really matter functionally because the little sofa health plans just gonna fit On the inside here. So just about any shaped things you might want to avoid our tops that flare too far in, they might not have as quite as tight fit, but straight up and down or slightly flared out even can be good. Okay, let's go ahead and throw a lid. So I'm gonna throw a flat lid. That's gonna be thrown knob side up and this will be the only lid I'll show you knob side up of this technique or thrown upside up with this technique.
Similar to the other one that we thrown with the first style where it was knob side up. You're going to be limited on the width you can use in these type of shapes because it is a flat list so it's gonna be more prone to warping again. But on small containers, anything you know less than around five inches you should be okay but once you go beyond that 5678 inches wide, you really run the risk of having some warping issues. Center up my clay compressed down in our flat pancake about so and then I'm going to move about an inch out from that center area and continue to compress the rest of the clay down. And that way I'll have this piece of clay right here to use my mom We'll check our measurement. So what I'm going to measure is the inside of the best long throwing this for because what I'm going to be throwing is the flange fit right inside of there a little bit lighter and about there we are getting close clean up this I'm going to finish shaping my knob because what we're going to do with the finishing forming process of this I'm gonna be lifting up these outside walls and flaring them out to sit on top of that piece.
And so they may get in our way, just a little bit so I'm just gonna go ahead and finish the knob now before I finish that shaping Okay, and we are looking pretty good. Now we are wider than our measurement. I may have to come back and cut some of this away but I'm going to go ahead and start lifting up these this outside wall. And now there's two ways you can do this either with your finger similar to how we did the plate or you can come back in and start an initial cut with your wooden knife. Once you're into what you think would be the proper depth, just lock and hold your position. Just seeing where we're at measurement wise we're looking pretty good.
Come in and lift that and clear out that wall with this type of lid, I try to Keep the width of this upper flange area right here. You know roughly about this with you would probably look okay if it overhang a little bit but you know generally try to keep it pretty tight with the next I'll show you trends work a little bit better with the overhang was going to come in and check my measurement. We're looking pretty spot on. looking pretty good. Clean it up just a little bit. Now this lid once again, similar to the other flat lid we could trim it somewhat upside down the side of Chuck and TriMet if we chose or really it's almost not completely necessary.
Once the stiffens up a little bit. You can brace it with your hand and come in and clean up the bottom with a damp sponge and remove a lot of those hard edges if there are any. Assuming that you threw it thin enough Okay, now that our lid has had a chance to set up, let's go ahead and cut it off and see how we did. See there's a little bit of an edge there that we could clean up through either trimming or just with our spines, but let's see how we're fit. Okay, looks like a pretty good fit right there. Okay, a nice little shadow in between our lid there.
That is ideal with that one little sunken lid.
