You have a super memory and a great structure. So what's next? This is what's next. let's develop an overpowering sense of confidence.
Self confidence that will make you feel free to communicate and to express whatever you want to any person you want. in any circumstance you want. Confidence is a key issue. It is something that they never work on. In an English school in a language school, and is a problem that we all have, or learning, or when we're using English here lies. Can you remember the times where you had to give a presentation, introduce yourself to someone or have unimportant English conversation?
A lot of things were at risk here. A lot of possible benefits, a lot of possible consequences. And in the moment of truth, you throw has it happened to you? this overwhelming sense of anxiety, of paralysis of tension, stress and nervousness used to happen to me all the time, my voice shaking, if I could speak, sometimes my throat got closed. I would just shaking like a little dog without knowing what to say without daring to open my mouth. Maybe you don't have this extreme case, but I'm sure you have felt a little insecure once in a while about your English.
So the point of Step seven is to give you an unbreakable sense of self confidence. Are you ready? Let's get started. So today we'll learn to get out of our comfort zone. So what is our comfort zone? our comfort zone is a place where everything is safe, where if you make a mistake, nothing happens, where if you do something incorrect, there's absolutely no consequence where everything is predictable and peaceful.
Right now it's important to have a comfort zone. It's important to have a place where we can take refuge and renovate. Right? But it's equally important to consistently and constantly get out of our comfort zone. outside of our comfort zone is where real learning happens. Remember this, if you're not out of your comfort zone, you are not learning.
So you need to learn to constantly stretch the limits of your comfort zone to stretch your insights, your learnings and your skills. And by definition, getting out of your comfort zone is always uncomfortable. So let's learn to love the uncomfortable ness instead of being paralyzed by it. Tip number one, give yourself permission to make all the mistakes that you need when you're Speaking English there's nothing that slows your English down more than thinking about what you're going to say next, and checking if it's correct or incorrect. The time to improve correct and grow your English is in moments like this. You're watching a video, you're having a time specifically for your English refinement.
However, when you're using English in your work or in your real life, it is not time to learn or to practice or to correct your English. It is time for action to communicate to close deals to transmit information. If there are mistakes, remember what we discussed in a previous session. Take a mental note of course, don't forget it. But at that moment, let it go and keep communicating. So I give you permission to make a million mistakes if necessary.
And I want you to say the same thing. Please say with me I give myself permission to make all the mistakes that I need to speak English. Tip number two, laugh about yourself. I'm serious. Don't take yourself so seriously. Because when you try to pay yourself so seriously, people detect that you are compensating for some insecurities.
Belied, be relaxed, be friendly. And at the same time before now be smart. With the structures are what that we talked about in the last step that automatically gives you the formality and the organization to be perceived as a serious person. Having that said, Don't worry about anything that happens. Don't worry. If you say beach instead of beach I'm sorry for the word but don't worry if something terrible happens because you made a mistake with your English.
It's not too bad. What what's the worst that could happen? The best that could happen is that you will have a good time with the person in front of you. laugh about it. I appreciate that you discovered that mistake. And use this good humor this laugh.
Remember, laughing is an emotion. And what do we remember what we memorize? First events charged with emotion. So use mistakes, use embarrassing moments to laugh about yourself, laugh about your communication and your English and make it help you remember so that you can correct it later on. And now tip number three if you don't love your English Nobody will. Write, people can detect if you like yourself or if you like how you speak.
Or if you don't, even before you open your mouth. Right? If you're speaking English and you're always saying things like, I'm sorry, my English is bad. I'm sorry, my pronunciation sucks. I'm sorry. never apologize for your English.
How many times have you been learning English? How many hours? How much of your life have you spent in classrooms sitting down, repeating practicing using your English? never apologize for your English or the mistakes you make? start appreciating it. I mean, you have been taking care of your English for this last steps.
And you're making it your own. You're making it a reflection of your own personality. individuality, right? You're working with vocabulary, you're improving your pronunciation, you're learning to flow smoothly. To intonate to demonstrate your own authentic self, etc, etc. start feeling a little appreciation for it and for all the hard work that you have done.
So, love your English and people will love it as well. So now, I have a big challenge for you. I really want to take you out of your comfort zone. I want to accelerate your heartbeat and make your English voice shake. I want you to feel so nervous that you don't know if what you want to say will come out or if it will be stuck in your throat because you're so nervous. So this is a challenge.
If you accomplished this challenge, I promise you first you'll feel uncomfortable that when you finish the challenge you will Feel better than you have felt in a long time. You'll feel so confident, so satisfied, and with a sense of accomplishment, that maybe nothing else previously in your English learning experience has given you. So please, even if it makes you really uncomfortable, do this challenge. And please share the results with me. Are you ready? This is what I call the Skype challenge.
So most probably you already have Skype, right? This software that allows you to make calls almost for free anywhere in the world. Actually, you can make free calls if it's from a computer to a computer, right? But if you want to make phone calls to local numbers, you need to add a little bit of Skype credit. So if you have an account Make sure that you have a little credit. Now, if you don't want to use Skype, you can use your phone number, your office number, whatever you want.
I think that long distance calls nowadays are pretty affordable, right? Especially since we're only going to be speaking for three or four minutes. So, are you getting an idea of what you will do? That's right, you're gonna make a real phone call in English to a real place in the United States or in Canada, in England, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, South Africa, wherever you want. This is where we're going to do step number one. Select a topic.
So let's plan a trip for you. Think of a trip that you're planning or that you would like to make in the future. It doesn't matter if you would like to make this trip next week or in two years. But think of an English speaking country that you would like to visit. also select the city. If you would like to visit New York, that's perfect.
Chicago, Montreal, London, whatever you want. Choose your city. And then think about what kind of things you need to do to arrange the trip. Most definitely you need to call a hotel, maybe you need to call a couple of restaurants, and some transportation, services, taxis, bosses, airplanes whenever you want to choose one of them. For this example, it's choose a hotel. For me, this is the easiest to practice with.
Right? So that's step number one. Choose a hotel in a city in a country that you would like to visit and that speaks English. Got it? Now, step number two, look for the info of this place. If you selected a hotel, go to Google and type New York hotel phone number.
If it's a restaurant in New York restaurant phone number, even better, if you have a specific hotel or restaurant in mind, look for the phone number of that particular restaurant or place and write it down. Number three, plan your script. So think about three questions that you would like to ask to the hotel receptionist or to the restaurant person that picks up the phone. Right? Obviously, if it's hotel, you could ask questions like, how much is the night or what kind of pros do they have? What kind of facilities are many Does the hotel have?
What restaurants or cool places Can you find around the hotel? And what kind of things do they recommend that you do? around the city? right what everyone, just select three questions that you would like to get information about. Step number four, time for action. This is where your heartbeat should start speeding up.
And you should start feeling that this is becoming real. This is not practice time. This is real action time. So pick up your phone or open up Skype in your laptop and dial the number. field and nervousness feel this thing pension anxiety and learn to love it. Learn to love your voice shaking because you know what, one minute after they pick up the phone, one minute after you start speaking, this anxiety will become excitement and pure pleasure.
I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. Whenever you're feeling terrified and you start doing it, it becomes one of the most marvelous experiences you can ever have. So have this call. Push yourself to your limit and get out of the comfort zone. Good luck with your call. And finally, step number five.
Right write down a little report about what happened. First, write a little paragraph explaining your call. I called this hotel I asked this, this is what they told me. Second, write down how you felt. I felt completely terrified in the beginning but then it progressively got better and better and better, until I ended up feeling completely excited by the time we finished the call on third, just write what you think could have gone better. In your call, write something like next time, I know that instead of using this word, I should use this word, or I made this mistake that I'll never make again because now I know that I should say this or whatever feedback that you can give yourself.
Go ahead. So a good tip might be to record your call with your cell phone while you're talking. One to become comfortable and more and more and more relaxed, listen to your English voice. And number two's so you can detect everything. You can detect the little mistakes and you can detect what you liked and you didn't to bring the evolution and improvement to your English now. Sounds exciting.
I hope so. This is one of my favorite activities. And when I do this with groups of people, I love it, how all of us even myself when I'm explaining and I'm telling them that they need to do a call, I get terrified. Once a student told me, okay, teacher, I'll do it. But can you do it first to give me a little demo? In that moment, my heartbeat started beating 200% faster, I had to do the call.
And when I did it, guess what? My voice was shaking as well. I remember how after one minute, I just felt equally excited as my students get when they make this real call. It's good for everybody, no matter what your level is. So go ahead and try it now. I hope you have fun.
And I'll see you on the next part. Stay well
