A number of years ago, I had a surgeon had to see a surgeon, I should say, to have a small issue sorted out. And as a part of the console, he asked me what I did for a living. And in short, I told him about how I build a large group of companies and had effectively retired a short time before. And I now consulted and taught small to medium enterprises how to grow by teaching them how to think like big business owners, etc, etc. There was obviously a little more to the conversation, as you can imagine, but you get my drift. Anyway, when I finished, he sat back in the chair and he said this to me.

Wow, can you teach me how to do that? I'm basically the highest paid individual in my profession, but in this business consumes my life. I spent five years studying to become a doctor and another four to become a specialist. And I can't remember a single day where we were taught how to run a business. And it really hit home for me on that day, because I was talking to to an intelligent and incredibly skilled surgeon, a gentleman who would spend almost a quarter of his life studying for his profession. It had never been taught how to run a business, and was suffering because of it.

And I've heard this story, literally hundreds and hundreds of times from business owners in every field of enterprise that you can imagine. You see, for the majority of business owners, when it comes to their skills in their chosen fields of expertise. They are professionals, highly skilled and brilliant at what they do, which is often why they started their own business in the first place. But when it comes to their capability as business leaders and business owners, which I can assure you is a very different skill set to their professional skills. And as a consequence, they manufacture a mediocre business in which they become trapped. Just as my friend the surgeon, head Please don't take anything I just did the wrong way sincerely. It is not meant as criticism. But my business journey was very different. I was blessed to be mentored by a brilliant business mind.
