Welcome to Module Two of thought engineering the key to velocity. It's great to be with you again, I hope you're having an absolutely awesome day. And I hope you have your pens and paper ready, because we're going to be pumping through some, some great content here. Now, I'd like to start by asking you, have you have you ever made a mistake in life? Now? If you haven't, I'm more than happy for you to borrow one of mine, because I have plenty of them to share.
But that's another story anyway. So have you ever made a mistake in life? Now, what happens when when we make mistakes or something doesn't go our way? The way that we planned it? What's the first thing that we generally that our minds generally want to do? Generally they want to do this, don't they?
They want to lay blame. So, you know, it wouldn't have happened if that he hadn't done so and so or blah, blah, blah. It's not my fault because Fred over there didn't give me the right document. Right? They all dog ate my homework trick. But when I'm flying blind, am I learning the most I can, when I'm laying blame?
Who has the power in the situation? Me or the other person? who's in control the other person, right? So what we want to do is you want to steer clear of blaming because it doesn't serve us It doesn't serve us in any way, shape or form. Now, when we get beyond blame, we get to what generally happens next in the in the order of responses that we do, which is this justify, right? I mean, I've been working like a dog up all night, and I'm tired, blah, blah, blah.
There was there was a crash on the freeway, and the traffic was terrible, blah, blah, blah. And whoever you're talking to, they thinking nice. Wow, that's a great excuse. That makes me feel so much better. Right? We've been on both ends of that stick before.
Now, does that situation? Does that perspective solve any problems? Is that in an optimal position to move forward from? No. So justification is a total waste to You see, when we're in motion, which we need to be at all times in business, and I'll explain that further in a later module, laying blame and justifying just it just doesn't serve us. It's a complete waste of time.
Then there is one other level so the next level and you may find that year when you analyze this, that you actually live here a little more than you think. And that is Shine. So, you know, how could How could, how could I possibly have been so stupid? Why was I Why did I do that? What an absolute dumb thing that was to do? So, you know, does being in a position of senior giving yourself a hard time does that actually does that actually change anything?
Does that put you in an optimal position? No, beating yourself up doesn't hurt. So what's the perspective or the point of view that allows you to learn the most to get the most, most optimal value and move with velocity whenever anything happens or is or is not, you know, in your favor. It's this is taking responsibility right? You see, I'm not saying that you're responsible necessarily for whatever happened. I just want you to look at it from the point of view of being responsible.
Because if I'm looking at it from the point of view of being responsible, what's the advantage that I have over other people, it's the ability to learn quickly and move with velocity right? You see, the three below the line behaviors. They are literally nothing but a total waste of time, absolutely nothing else. They are stationary positions which from which you hold no power or ability to move forward. So many of us spend vast amounts of time and energy inside these three activities with They have been consciously aware that they are literally a total waste of time. They serve nothing.
Excuse me. If you would have spend 10 2030 minutes some people spend a lifetime laying blame on someone or something else and or justifying why something wasn't your fault, or why didn't go as planned. Does that change the fact that the problem still needs to be solved? No, it doesn't change a thing. You have to understand that the secret sauce in developing velocity within your business and life is not in vain, right? That's irrelevant.
It doesn't matter. It's in getting it right. That says being sane right is the booby prize. Now that doesn't mean you don't find the source of an issue or problem or outcome that didn't go as planned. And in later model modules, I'll actually show you exactly how to do that rapidly with extraordinary efficiency. But don't waste your time in laying blame or or justifying or someone or something else was too blind, or beating yourself up for making a mistake.
Who cares? All you're doing is wasting valuable time, resources and money and slowing down your speed of production. Many years ago, I was involved in a business with some individuals. It was a separate entity from my main companies. And whilst I won't go into details, essentially they were telling me lies and they ultimately stole some money from me. I spent months incredibly angry and fresh.
Straight about what had happened, unable to move past it, the deceit, blaming them for what they did. I was stationary, or I was going nowhere until one day a friend of mine asked me what was wrong, because clearly there was. So I told him the story. And he said to me, Paul, who was responsible for giving them the flexibility to get away with what they did. Now, my first and immediate response when he said it to me was that my blood began to boil, or was about to explode. When he looked at me and said, again, Paul, who's responsible, and in that moment, instead of exploding, a small actually came over my face.
Now I really wanted to tell him to go and get what I think you know what I mean? But the fact is, he was right. And I had to take some of my own medicine. I was responsible for not putting the right checks and balances in place, and in that moment, I was freed. Now, you could easily argue the case Did they behave badly, they behaved illegally and stole money from me, because that is in fact, an accurate reflection of the truth. But that's irrelevant.
Because if I stay in that place, living that reality, am I in an optimal position to move forward? No, not only taking responsibility that they placed me in an optimal position to move forward, that realization allowed me to learn an incredible amount about the mistakes I've made, that I certainly won't repeat again, you just need to ask yourself, where is the optimal opportunity for forward motion? Is it above the line or below the line? Imagine what would happen to your cycle time and your ability to produce if all you ever did was play above the line. And that doesn't just apply to your work. It also applies to your personal life.
Imagine what would happen to your whole business if everyone in the business played above the line? Well, I'm going to share share with you in a little while just exactly how to do Do that. But basically, you just have to determine Do you want to move with velocity in life? Or do you want to take an hour and a half to watch 60 minutes? Okay. So awareness is the first key to improvement, right?
And now that you're aware of the behavior and this principle, I'd like to share with you a little game to help you change the behavior within yourself and your entire team. It's called the to back rule game. And I learned this from a very dear friend and mentor of mine. It's not mine, I didn't make it up. But it's incredible. So I want to share it with you.
Now, if you have a team around you, you really want to take take the time to get them on board with this. So either get them to watch this module and learn it or learning yourself and educate them be a leader. So first, you need to get yourself a large jar. You'll know why, say a large jar. After about a month, we'll solve this and place it in the middle of your office. Now.
Every time you catch yourself or anyone in your team doing any of the below the line behaviors, laying blame justifying or being shameful. They have to immediately put $2 or you in the jar. Now I know that sounds simple, but awareness is the first key to improvement. And the more you do this, the more you will become aware and become aware of I should say, and eliminate the behavior. Now, after a couple of weeks, a number of things will actually happen. Firstly, the job will start to fill up much quicker than you actually think it will.
You'll be amazed how much time you spend below the line and how much time is wasted day. Secondly, and more importantly, you will see a transformation in the way that you and your team interact and operate and you will be you'll be amazed at the change in the energy and more importantly the productivity in your environment. And lastly, you'll have a jar full of money that you eat same can also be used for great Christmas party or Friday night drink. or giving us some charity, whatever you want to do, it's up to you. Now, let me make something really clear, I still have my jar, and it still gets more money from me than anyone else in my team. I've been aware of and practicing this principle for most of my business career, and I still catch myself up below the line.
I'm far from perfect. But that's not the point. The point is that I catch myself. I don't however, then proceed to beat myself up because I threw out some excuse of some kind. I'm just immediately aware of it. And that allows me to rapidly catch it and move back to an optimal position of velocity and positive influence above the lawn.
I just want you to become aware of how much time you spend below the line. Time that is just completely and utterly wasted. The last thing I would like to say to you is that to be aware of this with people who you choose to do business With or inviting your space, individuals who are unable to take responsibility for their actions, their results and performance should raise serious concerns for you. Individuals who spend a lot of time laying blame and justifying and unable to change that behavior as a general rule, problem creators not problem solvers. And you need to question whether they are supporting or suppressing your organization and your prosperity. Now, you don't have to believe me with this principle or any others in this program, because they are all measurable.
So put these principles into motion, living and existing above the line. Watch its impact on you and your organization and allow effectiveness to be your measure of truth. Now, just a side note, feeling shame is a slightly different kettle of fish because Often it's, it's it's more of a confidence issue than anything else. And if you can help someone improve their confidence by educating this game to stop feeling shame, then you not only will support not only will they support you in your organization's prosperity, but you're also helping that person positively influence other people in their lives and in their community and the global community as a whole. Remember, synergy? It applies to everything.
So in summary, remember that lying blind, justifying and lying blind justifying and feeling shame and as stationary positions. They are literally a waste of time, commit to living above the line, commit to responsibility, commit to getting it right not being right, and what's your productivity and velocity skyrocket. In the next module, we're going to cover the definition of communication and reshape forever, the way that you communicate to accelerate your productivity. The charts. So, until we meet again in the next module, please be superb. think clearly and have an incredible day.
