During this video, I'm going to talk about habits and neural pathways. So when it comes to language learning habits are a key part of it. It's better to be consistent and to build in habits and routines than to not have these in place. In my experience, at least consistency and momentum have a sense of confidence and a sense of progress in your day to day. So when it comes to habit formation, I want to draw your attention to a study that was done on how many days it takes to form a habit. So this is done by Philippa Lally, she's a health psychology researcher at the University College of London.
They did a study over a 12 week period with 96 people, and they asked whether or not they did the behavior and how automatic it felt. In conclusion, what they discovered was that it takes 66 days on average to form a habit. So if you're somebody right now who wants to develop a habit, it's important to realize that it won't come after a few days or even two or three weeks. That is worth persevering because once you hit that sweet spot that will become an automatic habit that you can carry forward. And things become that little bit easier with that perseverance. With neural pathways, it's also important to be aware of neural pathways.
So if you're a beginner right now and you feel that you suck and you're not doing well and you can't speak, it's important to realize that it's because you haven't developed a hardwire in your brain yet you haven't developed those neural pathways that will allow you to speak more effectively. So it's not a sign that you're not a language person or that you'll never get there. It's just right now you haven't developed those pathways in your brain. But with practice repetition, persistence, over time, you will start developing them. There's a great book called the talent code or what greatness is grown upon by Daniel Coyle. I'd recommend giving that a read it talks about how greatness and talent or greatness is bar is grown over time, nearly completely butchered that.
But it talks about why talent isn't the be all and end all the reports that are in a sense and actually points to the craft guilds that were farming at that time. So it wasn't just unique geniuses like Michael had. Angelo, and Leonardo and these people it was actually communities that were sprouting up in that time that led to the Renaissance. So it's well worth to read. It talks about Moylan, more than a little part of the pathway. I think it's at the end of this analysis.
It's a little bit of plastic that is plastic. And it strengthens over time. So when you practice more and more, that's threaten Trenton's. It's like an insulator. So it gets a ticker insulation, the more you practice, and the signal becomes stronger. So basically, you get better at the skill.
So it's well worth giving out a read, they'll explain it a lot better than I could take that on board. And it will help you to understand the importance of perseverance and that you'll get there over time. So that's the habits and the will pathways. And last and final module, we're going to talk about your environment, how to set yourself up for success in the long run. So I'll see you on the next module.
