Okay, welcome to lesson number three, the stick man, a simple image of how we think now, in this lesson, we are going to establish a very solid foundation which all other lessons and concepts are going to be built upon. So in order to gain a clearer understanding we must have an image or a picture to work with. So, why you might ask? Well, that's a great question. To gain control over anxiety we must know How we think we're all very smart people here so we can do this. So how do we think?
Well, we think in pictures, we think in images. Now if I were to ask you to think of your car for example, an image would flash onto the screen if your mind. Now you would think of the letters C, A, R, you wouldn't think of your car by weight or density, although those are characteristics of your car. No, you would actually have a picture or an image of your car flashed onto the screen if your mind. Now you wouldn't have a picture of my car because you don't know what my car looks like, you know what your car looks like. Or if you don't have a car, you'd still have an image of a car, which you're pretty familiar with.
And it would be that type of car which would flash on to the screen of your mind. So if I were to ask you to think of your house or your apartment, same thing, a pitcher with flash on to the screen of your mind, so we must have an image To work with to understand anxiety and how our mind works. But wait, what about your mind? Hmm? Now what is your mind look like? Have you ever heard the saying that?
Hey, Stan, it's all in your head. Anxiety is just in your mind. So just let it go. Yeah, I would imagine that you've probably heard something like that. But it really didn't help didn't know none of us who suffer and feel anxiety ever said, well, Gee, thanks. I didn't realize it was just in my head.
I'm all cured now. Now, it doesn't really work that way does it? So for most people, when I asked them, What does your mind look like? They'll say, Hi, your brain. Yeah, they have an image of their brain flash on to the screen of your mind. But you know what?
Your brain is not your mind. Your brain is a magnificent, powerful chemical transmission station in your body. But it's not your mind. As a matter of fact, your brain is no more your mind than your fingers and your toes. Now, in my opinion, we can't even begin to discuss anxiety without understanding how our mind works. Because we have to know how we think we think in pictures, and in our mind is, well, just one of the most important parts of us.
And if we don't understand how our mind works, you know, how are we even going to know what to do about curing anxiety if we don't even know what the mind looks like? And so, if we have the wrong picture, like a picture of the brain, we haven't even started off good. I mean, heaven forbid, we're already off to a bad start. But what would Frodo and Sam do if they were starting their journey to Mordor? And we're given a map of downtown Chicago. All right, you got the point.
So unlike our brain, which we know is a physical object because We can take a brain out of the skull, we can see it and we can even touch it if you dare, who. But we can even take a picture of it and doctors can operate on it. But the mind, well, that's a different the mind is not a physical object. So let's eliminate any confusion and put a picture to our mind. In 1934, there was a holistic doctor from San Antonio, Texas, and his name was Dr. Thurman fleet. And he believed that about 80% of all sickness, all illness and disease originates in the mind.
And he asked the same question. Now all of the doctors at that time were trying to treat disorders or elements of the mind through pills and surgery and I guess kinda like they do now. But if the mind is not in the body, why would we take a pill or have a surgery on the body? If the mind is not even in the body, so where is the mind. So to eliminate the confusion of what the mind look like he drew a simple stick figure like this. Alright, so he drew two circles, the small circle represented the body and the larger circle on top represented the mind.
Now, don't forget the cute little stubby arms and legs on. Well, I guess they are just little sticks. But anyways, he drew the mind much bigger than the body because the mind is much bigger and much more powerful in the body. Now, if you've seen this stick figure before, great I didn't invent the stick figure, but it is very powerful. And we're going to use it many times over and over and over in future lessons. So memorize what it looks like.
Take all the time that you need, and all wait. Alright, that's good enough. Now Seriously though, take a minute and quickly label the two parts labeled a small circle the body and the top circle. The mind. Now if you want, you can get your coloring pencils out and kill your stick figure, I don't care, why not have fun and eliminate the dark forces of anxiety. Now I'm just joking.
But the reality is sometimes the best solutions to our struggles and the problems in life are the simplest. Now I want you to think of this as child's play. And let's have some fun solving the world's problems. And we don't always need to be so serious. Well, I guess Wait a second. That's what we're trying to do, right?
We're trying to get rid of a serious problem in our life called anxiety. And that is no joke. But I did tell you to have fun with this. we'll label the parts complete the workbook and I will see you in the next lesson.
