Hello, this is Rob here from Rob cabin.com. So we've done what is a blog, and we've done why you should blog. So now here comes the how, how we create a website and blog. And we're going to start with domains. Now the domain is the something.com in the www something com web address that people type into the browser to visit certain websites. Now we'd all love a lovely short.com domain name that hasn't been registered yet.
But all is not lost, because I would advise you to go to lean domain search.com one of the best sites to find available domains. So all you have to do is put in a load of keywords or words that explain the business that you want to start up. So what domain do you choose? Well, I went for Rob carbon.com. My first name and last name. The benefit of this has been, I can write about anything I want.
Of course, I've got to stick to a niche or a subject of expertise, but I've been able to pivot it along the years. I started out on graphic design, I went on to web design. And now I blog about online marketing and creating digital products and passive income. The disadvantage of using my name is that I can't sell the domain very easily. Of course, I can buy another domain and redirect this site to it, but that will lose a bit of the branding. Another option you can go for with domains is to put keywords in the domain.
An example of a domain like this would be Smart Passive income, which is the personal blog of someone called Pat Flynn. And the topic of the blog is passive income or earning money. online in your sleep. So you can see that the domain explains exactly what the website does. Putting keywords in the domain sometimes benefits the site when people search for those keywords in Google. But the benefit of this is very slight.
And of course, an advantage of using keywords is that this brand can be sold a little bit more easily than a personal brand. Although I have to say this particular site is actually very connected to the personal brand of the owner Pat Flynn. Another option is to choose a domain that is totally random. Viper, chill, calm, it doesn't mean anything, but it's quite a nice sounding and memorable brand. And this is the website belonging to Glenn Allsop so the free websites I have chosen to explain different domains are actually connected to an individual. And during this course I will be talking a lot about branding yourself.
Whereas the website in fact yourself and the website will be almost indistinguishable as we go on. So remember that all the PDFs I showed you in the videos will be available for download, as is this one. And this has links to link domain search comm which I told you about earlier. And the next three links are two domain name registrars. So name cheap, 123, red and GoDaddy. Remember that these are affiliate links.
So if you click on any of these links in the PDF and make a purchase, then I may be renewing rated as an affiliate for that product. And we'll be talking about making money as an affiliate later. But just so that you understand I'll show you the process. So let's take the first one there. Now. And if you type in Rob coven.com and then go slash go slash name cheap, that will redirect to my affiliate link.
So we'll hit the return key now. And there you see the name cheap site loading. But you can see at the top here in the address bar, that the URL is not just name, cheap, calm, its name, cheap, calm, followed by some other data. And in fact, you can actually see the word affiliate in there. And the reason for this is that this information in the URL is passing data over to Namecheap, which is telling the site that I have sent the visitor over so then if this visitor was then to buy a domain, I will get a percentage of the profit to this company. And this is how affiliate marketing works all over the web.
The visitor, the purchaser doesn't pay a penny extra, but the person who recommends the product, the affiliate, gets a commission, so you can use them my affiliate link, or you could just go to Google and look for the domain name registrars as you wish. So let's try and purchase this domain doesn't exist calm. And there you see I'm UK based so the price is in pounds. But if you're in America, this would be under $10. And you can see immediately that you can purchase a domain very cheaply at any domain name registrar. So I hope you enjoyed that little video about domain name registration.
My name is Rob from Rob carbonite.com. And I'll see you in the next video.
