Your chief character in your story needs to be a hero at some level to your audience, your audience needs to be able to relate to your hero relate to the primary character in your story, but you cannot be careful about this. Sometimes you can make yourself the hero of the story. If you reveal enough about your weaknesses, your flaws and you don't make it sound like you're trying to be perfect and you're Superman or Superwoman. But most of the time when you're telling stories, someone else needs to be the hero. And that way the audience can look up to that person. They're not always looking up to you it will be much more effective than just talking about yourself.
