I'm gonna be talking about Twitter today. And we're gonna set up a quick Twitter profile for our fictitious design company creative designs. And we're going to be talking a little bit about how to market yourself with Twitter. So let's go to Twitter first of all. So we're in Twitter now, and this is my profile page. Twitter has had a redesign recently, and I'll show you the new header image size on your profile, you have one large image and I'll show you how to do that as well as of course your profile image but on the other pages, it's still shows your header image and your profile image, but it also has space for the background image but because the design is wider now is now obscured on a very small laptop view.
So you may decide not to do the background image that I teach you later on anyway, but let's get going with the course. And I'll interject later when we do the new header image size. Okay, we've logged out, and we're going to create a new Twitter profile. And you can have as many Twitter profiles as you want. It's not like Facebook or Google Plus. So I'm going to see if they've got creative designs, the way we spell it in our websites available, and I've set up an email address.
Unfortunately, the twisty handle that we want is already taken up at creative D is available. I quite like that. Let's use that one then. So create my account. And I've just confirmed my account with the email address confirmation code, the usual thing and I've already been invited to follow Lady Gaga, Mariah Carey and Lil Wayne. But as we're just creating the profile page.
Now let's get on and do that. So we'll go into settings and design. Okay, so I just want to show you here quickly, this is a profile background image this I've done for creative designs. And let's upload that to the site. So if we scroll down here, and we want the background color to be white, make it just FFF for whites. The link color, let's take the link color from the site.
So we'll click on the link, and there is the color. So we just quickly copy that and paste that in there. So there's our link color. And we'll click on Change background, and upload that Twitter background that I showed you just now. And I'll click save changes and view my profile page. And there we are.
Here's our little image on the left hand side and there is a new sized header image for Twitter these days. It's nice and wide, and I'm going to show you how How to upload it and how to create the new size in Photoshop. So as you can see at the top here, it's asking me to give my profile a makeover. And I found the new dimensions on 12, skip calm and a template as well, the head area is actually 1500 pixels wide, so extremely wide by 421 pixels high. And you can see on the template here in yellow, but it actually has a very small part of it that is visible. So here is the background image, I've got to cover my header.
And if I put the Opacity down to 50%, you can see the visible area and that's why I've put my various links in one of the visible areas. And it's like this because different parts of the header image are visible on different devices. So I've saved that out as a pin. So now let's update the Twitter profile header image. So it's updated my profile with my other header image and it's not looking very good. It's struggling a bit with resolution as the old header image was much smaller.
So let's edit profile and change the header photo upload photo. And there it is. So we've got the ability to zoom in and out. But as I did it to completely the right size, I'm just going to click Apply, and it says the header has been changed. So we'll now save changes. And so there's my new profile.
And as you can see, the header image fits nicely. You can see my logo and links to the various sites and let's see how it responds to different devices. So if you make the width of the site smaller, you can see the header image changes with it, but my logo and links are still visible. And for the photo. You've got a decision to make here. Do you put your own face your pretty face that will be square image of about 100 by 100 pixels, or do you put your logo, I always think it's better to put a face.
But if you have multiple Twitter accounts, then you may want to put a face on your main Twitter account and a logo on subsidiary Twitter accounts, which you may think this is as well. But I'm going to put my face here anyway. And in name, we can put a real name as well, even though it's for the creative designs websites, make sure you put your websites in or think it's best to put uppercase at the beginning of words there because that is more easily memorable. When you see a domain like that. And bio, this is the one you really have to think about because you've got 160 characters, and it really has to be something appealing for people who land on your Twitter profile and are deciding whether they want to follow you or not. You've really got to make it short, punchy descriptive about what you're going to tweet about.
A little bit light hearted and quirky as well. And there are some excellent ones out there. Okay, so there's a little bit of a problem here they've detected I'm using the same image as I have on another account, which is, of course, my main Twitter account. But somewhere I ignore that and save changes. So if we go back to the profile now, we see it's all looking quite nice. From the lack of tweets, all we got to do is tweet and might as well just do one now.
So from tiny acorns, massive folks do grow. So we aren't following anyone and we haven't got any followers. But that's all about change. Your best bet is to then follow as many people as possible in your industry, the people you really respect. So in this case, great designers, great designer, marketers, great web designers. People in the industry are really fantastic.
You start following them. You start tweeting, you obviously get in touch with all your friends and you will pick up followers. Of course with social media, the best way is to Join conversations, engage, see what people are talking about, get involved, help people, all the usual stuff that we'll be going through in greater detail and the rest of this course. Another thing you should do is tweet out your stuff, you should obviously tweet out some great stuff that you find from other people. So blog posts that you find interesting, as well as interesting comments that will help people in your industry, but 20%, I would say 10 or 20% of what you tweet out should be your own stuff. Here's a little tweet here.
We've got the heading, how to get freelance web design jobs, and then the link, sort of tweet that one out. And there is so I hope you enjoyed that little introduction to Twitter. There. Lots more can be said about Twitter. It really is one of the best social networks out there. Still, after all these years, there's been countless designers, web designers, and other people in online industries that absolutely live and die by Twitter.
They get jobs by they pick up contacts, they pick up all sorts of collaboration and collaborative ideas. So it's something that you really need to spend some time on not too much time. Of course, with all social media, you've got to be wary that it is a time kill as well. But certainly for following people in your industry, and connecting and engaging, as well as throwing out your own links, along with 80% of other useful content that you throw out there. Then Twitter is an absolute goldmine of social media. Okay, I hope you enjoyed that.
Thank you very much.
