Hi, this is Dr. De and in this module we are going to look at some of the complications related to diabetes that is uncontrolled. Now I struggled with whether to add this section or not to add the section and ultimately I decided to add it and this is why is that what I want you to do is to strive for health and to Strive for Wellness. I want you to be healthy and understand that wellness is on a continuum health is on a continuum, and that when you take care of yourself now, it produces in yield results for better quality of life in the future. So I included the section on complications, just to let you know that if you don't manage your blood sugars and you don't get your regular checkups, to make sure that you're on the right path over a long period of time, your body He basically just gives out and is no longer able to handle the extra burdens.
And the results are these complications, and they decrease the quality of your life. You don't want them. So use this as a springboard to help you say yes, I'm going to grab health and I'm going to ride that so that I am healthy and well, and including my dream big health dream to continue for years and decades to come. I do want you to at least take a moment to hear some of the complications and really think about how they would change the quality of your life and your loved ones who would be helping take care of you. Things like difficulty with floaters in your eyes or it can even get so advanced that you It leads to blindness. So you don't want that So you want to think about managing your blood sugars Now, you might have more frequent colds and flus because when your blood sugars are higher, it actually suppresses your immune system.
And then you might find that you start getting sick more and more and more often and you don't want to have that either. So when you manage your blood sugar's your immune system is stronger, and then you don't have to worry about getting sick or not rebounding from colds and flus quickly or easily. Another thing you want to be considered about is, you might have what they call neuropathies. neuropathies are situations where you have either pain or you are not able to feel usually your fingers and your toes and that's because the nerves are starting to be damaged because they're not getting the oxygen that they need and the nutrients they need. And it usually starts at these extremities and so one of the problems with What they call neuropathy, particularly in your feet, and sometimes when people are overweight is you may not notice if you can't see your feet, you may not notice that you have a sore or a bruise or an open sore on your feet.
And so when you have neuropathy, you don't feel it. And if you are overweight and you don't see it or you just don't look at your feet. Now you might have a wound that isn't healing quickly or easily. And that's another symptom of diabetes that you don't, your wounds don't heal quickly so you get colds and flus. That's one way of looking at it. You have wounds that don't heal as easily.
That's another way of looking at it. And if you don't have these wounds that heal, and you don't get them taken care of. In a bad case scenario, that means that they may decide that there's so much problem with your foot, there may be bacteria or fungus or whatever, from the sores that haven't healed, that sometimes that's when they start talking about amputating toes or parts of your leg or your foot, right. And then at that point that actually changes the quality of your life and the quality of your ability to move around. So those are in more advanced cases, but they come from not managing your blood sugar's kidney problems also can happen as a result of blood sugar's that haven't been managed. And that can be complicated if you have hypertension or high blood pressure as well.
That's a big complication. And another complication is people that have diabetes are at higher risk for heart disease. So just by having diabetes, you have more risk of heart disease itself and diseases and problems related to heart disease. So you want to really think about some of these complications. They happen usually not when you're diagnosed, but they happen years after not managing your blood sugar's. So making sure that you're doing the lifestyle issues that you're working with the right medications that you're seeing your doctor are all really important parts of preventing complications.
Thank you for spending this time hearing this difficult module. And now the rest of the modules we're going to work on are going to tell us how to make sure that complications are not part of your health picture.
