Welcome back to 20 moves in 20 days. Today we are going to work at our fan kick. Alright, so we worked on bought mugs yesterday. And that's a really good preparation for fan kicks. You can do pancakes at any height, so it doesn't have to be super high, I will show you what they ended up usually being which is higher, but you don't have to worry about the height of your leg, you just want to get the coordination down, especially if your arms to your life because we're going to use both. Okay, so what I'm going to do first though, is just teach you the feet themselves.

So I'm going to step out with my right leg here. And then I'm going to brush my left leg from this corner of the room to this corner. And so what I'm going to do is a swinging motion. Think about it in terms of a fan, right? It's a fanning motion. If you had a long skirt on it would go push with you, right?

So it's a fanning motion from this corner to that. So I'm going to keep it low to start. So I'm going to bring this foot through, it's going to go on up and to the other side. Okay, and then from there, I'm already there. So I can just fan right here. All right.

Again, I'm sort of thinking corner and corner. Let me show you what that looks like this way. So if I'm wanting to step right first and then kick left, I'm going to step right, fan Left, left, fan, right, right, fan Left, left fan, right. Good. Okay. And you can do these in so many ways.

So you don't just have to do like, one step in between even you can do right fail left, step, step, step, and go, step, step, step, and go, step, step, step, and go. So, again, lots of ways to do this. I don't want to overwhelm you, but just know you don't have to do it. In one particular way, okay, so we're joking, I practice that a few times. In fact, I think it's kind of helpful to practice it in terms of the walks in between, just to give you a little more momentum that's going to help you as you try to kick even higher, it's helpful to have a little more momentum. So I'm going to actually start here.

I'm going to start by going stepping to the right, fanning left here. And then I'm going to walk left, right, left, this last step is going to be the impetus for me going to the right. Okay, so really, it's two steps in between the last one counts as your step out. Here. Fan, right? Yeah, then that is your first step.

Right, left, right, fan. Left, right, left, San. Right, left, right. fan, left, right, left, fan. Okay, good. So a couple quick things to make sure that you are comfortable with.

The first is that like Obama went really straight knees and really pointed toes for the foot that's working or for the lake that's working, okay. So the fanning leg itself needs to be straight and pointed. Okay? The other one though, if you'll notice, I'm going 123 this play is allowing me to have that momentum, that leverage to go to the other side, and then I bend here again, two, three. So as I'm standing my leg, I'm also using that standing light to give me a little bit of when I go, Okay, let's practice going a little bit higher, and then I'm going to teach you the arms. So and again, if you Don't have the ability to go higher now.

Don't worry about it at all You will build up this flexibility and the strength as you continue learning. So we have, so I'm gonna start this way first we have, right, fan, step, step, step, fan, step by step, fan steps, step, step, fan. Step, step, step, Sam, last time. Good. Okay, there are a lot of different things you can do with your arms. I'm going to show you the most common sound moving your feet, your arms are going to go like this.

Up, out and around, up, out around so they go straight up through your middle, and then come in a circle around, up straight through, and around, up and around. up and around. up and around. up and around. Okay. So you have Oh, I guess I should show, huh?

Okay, so what I'm going to do is show you the coordination real fast. And then we'll practice that together. Let me just show it to you. So if I'm starting tomorrow, right? It's going to be my opposite leg. I'm sorry, opposite arm to my fanning leg.

So for instance, if I'm stepping right, it's going to be my left leg that fans, right. So correct. Yeah, I know. That's confusing. Step two, the red. my left foot is gonna fan therefore my right arm is gonna cut bump it around.

Okay. And so you have a little bit of that opposition going, which is super common in jazz, you're going to see it a lot. Okay, so, I up and now I'm going to fan by going up and around. Yes, step Step opposite arm to fanning Lake we know my right leg said a fan. So my left arm comes up with a route 123123123 and 123 if you want to add the finishing touch as you can see what I'm doing with my arms. And so at the height of my leg being, you've come from this corner here now at your writing corner, I'm also looking at that foot.

Yeah, so it has a nice sort of, almost like laid out laid back sort of feeling. Alright, let me do it facing this way. You can do it with me a couple times. You can keep your legs low. In fact, right now I'm going to do low legs and that way, you can just focus on the coordination of the arms to the legs. This usually takes a little bit of time.

It feels odd at first, but I promise you, you'll get it. Just give yourself some grace. Okay, so here's step one. And around, step, step, steps and around, step, step, step and around. Jeff, step, step, step, step, step, left leg, right arm, right arm hurt, sorry, left arm, and then right leg, I should probably try to talk and do the motion at the same time clearly does not work. Let's just do a couple more time.

Just remember opposition. Here we go to the right. 1-231-231-2312 3123123 guide you did it, he learned pancakes. pancakes are super fun. You can do a lot of different things with them. They're very, very common in jazz, so you're definitely gonna want to know them.
