Hello everybody this is Cambridge English teacher Rory from student languages calm Welcome to my writing paper video course. In this lesson we're going to be focusing on Part Two writing a letter. So I will show you an example let's a question. We will look at some advice for writing a letter. We will look at an example letter answer. You will critique this answer and then we'll look at some examiners critique of this answer will correct some mistakes from this answer.

And finally, we will look at some more general tips and concluding questions or writing a letter. So let's get started. Here is the Example letter question. And it's come from the Cambridge English advanced handbook for teachers. You can access by typing in this web address into your internet browser. For example, Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox or Safari, internet turning to page 33.

You will find three questions. And this is question number four. And it says, you have received a letter from an English friend. My new job is great. And next month I get to travel on business. Guess what?

I'm actually coming to your town for a week. I'll be free some evenings and one weekend. I want to make the most of this opportunity. So I'd like your advice please, where to go? What to do. Why.

Cheers, Chris. Write your letter. In reply, you do not need to include postal addresses. Okay? If you could remember from previous lesson, I recommend that you take 45 minutes for your answer in part to the writing, which means you could take five minutes to plan. Five minutes check at the end 35 minutes to write your answer.

So, here's some more advice in the Cambridge English advanced handbook teachers says letters and emails in the Cambridge English advanced writing paper will require a response which is consistently appropriate for the specified target reader. For example, the editor of a newspaper or magazine, Director of a company to school or college principal or to hear this letter on this question here has been written to us informally, and it looks like it's from a friend or a peer. So, if your target reader is a peer or friend, you can write an informal language. But if there are college principal, for example, you need to write in formal language. So it depends on who the target reader is. And letters and emails are require candidates to carry out functions, for example, to reassure somebody to correct a misunderstanding, or to justify a course of action.

Okay. And what we are going to be doing in our letter is recommending some things and then justifying our recommendations. Why should he do the things that we recommend? Okay, so if you haven't done it already, you should pause this video now and open this web address. It will open up the Cambridge English advanced handbook for teachers. You can do this in Internet Explorer or Safari or Chrome or another internet browser.

When you've done that, press play. Okay, so hopefully you've done that. And now what I'd like you to do is to scroll down to page 43. And you will see a letter which looks like this. This is an example answer that a candidate has written. So when you are looking at page 43 You can see this letter here.

Don't look at the examiner comments at the bottom of the of the page, just focus on this letter. What I'd like you to do is to keep this page open on your computer. And then I'd like you to copy down this table here onto a sheet of paper with a pen or with a pencil. So pause this video now and copy down this table. And once you've done that, press play. Okay, so hopefully you've done that.

Now, what I'd like you to do is to read the example letter from the document to complete your table that you've written down On your sheet of paper, giving it a mark for each of the criteria, content, communities, GPA, organization, and language. So you need to give it a mark one is bad and five is good. So somewhere on this scale 234 and also I'd like you to write why and give your comments. So if you've given it to the for for content for example, I would like you to write what the good aspects of the content were in the commentary section. You can spend quite some time on this and try to be as detailed as possible. So pause this video now.

Complete this table with the example letter from the handbook teachers. When you're ready, press play Okay, so hopefully you've done that. And now what we can do is we can have a look at some real examiner comments, which have also come from and booked for teachers, same page as the answer at the bottom of the page, we can see that the examiner has given us a mark for each of the four criteria. And he's written a lot of comments. So you should pause this video now. And compare these marks in these comments with yours and see if they're similar or see if they're different.

Doesn't matter if they're different. But I advise you to read this commentary in detail because it will give you a really good understanding of what the examiners are looking for, for each of these four marking criteria, and it'll help you to get really good marks for each of these in the exam. And it will help you to know what you need to write about how you need to write To get the best marks possible. So pause this video now, have a read of these marks in these comments and compare them with your own. When you're ready, press play. Okay, hopefully you've done that.

Now what we can do is actually have a look at the parts which I underlined here in the comments, because I thought they were really important. So what all content is relevant target reader fully informed, so relevant, and answering all aspects of the conventions of an informal letter use. So the writer knew it was an informal letter and use the correct style of writing for this Typing for this type of letter. And he held the target reader's attention. It was well organized and had a good flow, easy to read. They used a variety of cohesive devices, range of vocabulary suitable for the task and the range of simple and complex grammar forms.

These are all really important points. So if you choose to write an informal letter in the exam, try to incorporate these ideas and these points into your writing. Now, here are some mistakes that I found in the letter and what I'd like you to do is to correct the mistakes I've done the first two for you. And so maybe the mistakes are spelling mistakes or grammatical mistakes, or that it's difficult to understand the sentence. So pause this video now and try to correct the mistakes and the rest of the sentences. When you're ready, press play.

Okay, so hopefully you've done that. Now we can have a look at my corrections. So warm yourself up a little is what we say it's an expression, not warm your bones that is not an expression in English. next sentence needs to be past simple, because there were very specific time in the past. I would say the subject first at the beginning, the next sentence, the awesome DJ scream will be performed. To hang out and don't.

Don't just say that you don't need to say to me you need to say that at the end. Were at the next sentence we need the verb which is proof with a V, rather than proof an F. And in the final sentence, it needed to be one word rather than two words. This would depend on the context but in the context that we had, it should just be one word. Not. So here are some final points to think about when writing a letter. You should use language which depends on who the target reader is.

If you're writing a letter to a college principal, it will be very different. If you're writing a letter to a friend, you should use clear paragraphs. introductions and conclusions are important. So just these couple of things will help you to get better marks for the content of the marking criteria, the organization and the communicative achievement. All of those aspects and the language actually will help you with getting good better marks in each of the four marking criteria. And finally, if you start a letter, dear sir or madam, you should finish it with your statement.

To start a letter with Dear Mr. or Miss, you should finish the letter with your sincere. So, for homework, I would like you to write your own answer either to the letter question from this lesson. Or you can find another letter question by typing this website in your internet browser. If you send this letter to questions at student languages comm I will mark it for you and give you feedback based on official marking criteria. I will put it on my website for you to find if I have time, I don't always have time. But if I do have time I would do this for you.

And I will let you know when I put your writing on my website. If you would like to see some other writing samples on my website, you can type them In this web address here the last piece of homework is to read the Cambridge English advanced handbook for teachers. This is a fantastic document which is really useful for every aspect of the exam. And it will help you to know what the examiners are looking for, and how to prepare effectively for the exam. If you would like to book live lessons with me to practice this or any other parts of the exam, you can write to me at admin at student languages calm and I will be in touch with you about my life lessons. Okay, so I hope you enjoyed this video.

And in the next video lesson, we're going to be focusing on the writing part to a proposal. So I'll see you in the next lesson, guys. Bye
