Hello, everybody, and welcome to this Cambridge English advanced ca. Speaking paper, Part Four video. Let's get started. So, there are four parts in the speaking paper. And we're going to be focusing on part four, which is the discussion and it is a discussion that you have with the other candidates and with the examiner related to the topics in part three. So, in this lesson, you will learn the best tips techniques strategy, and you will be given some practice for this part of the exam.
So part four is called further discussion. What do you do in Part Four? Well, you have to answer some questions which are related to the topics in part three. Remember, Part Three is where you have one topic sentence and some prompt ideas. And part four is questions that in some way are related to this topic. The examiner asks your partner question, Can you respond to what your partner says?
Yes, you can. Here is an example of the type of questions that you might come across in Part Four. And if you go to this web address here, this is the Cambridge English advanced handbook for teachers. And if you go to page 84 page numbers at the bottom of the pages, go to page 84. You will see some questions which looked like this. Okay, it's time for my first tip.
You don't know the topic. You don't know what the topic will be in part three, and therefore you don't know what the question is they will ask you in Part Four. So what you should do before the exam is practice answering questions about lots of different topics, with your friend, or with a teacher. You can even book classes with me to practice this, and I'll show you how to do that by the end of this video lesson. What you need to be doing when you're practicing is to develop full and coherent parts palaces. And we've had some tips and ideas in previous lessons about how to do this.
For example, ask yourself the question why if you say something, ask yourself in your head Why do I say that? And then say the answer to the question why out loud that helps you to speak more fully into developer better You should also practice agreeing or disagreeing or disagreeing with other people in a conversation. So you should sit down and with somebody you know, you should practice asking their opinion and then either agreeing with that opinion or disagreeing with that opinion depends on what they say. Tip number two, you should practice giving reasons for Europeans. So, again, you stick to the opinion, then give a reason. I think this because you should ask yourself why you think or say something?
Why do I think this? Why did I say that? And then you can answer that question out loud. I think this because So, for example, I think that mobile telephones are bad I think this because people become addicted to their mobile telephones. And apparently, people are within an arm's reach of the telephone 80% day for example. Here's another example.
It could be a question such as Do you think the working week should be made longer or shorter? So let's have a look at an opinion about this. And then reason for the opinion. So I'd say I don't think they're working which we made longer. myself the question Why? Because in my opinion, people don't have enough free time to enjoy fun activities with their families and friends.
Okay. So there are In my opinion, I don't think the working week should be longer. And maybe it could be shorter. Because I'm getting my reason because in my opinion tip number three, what you think and your opinions, they're actually not important. The language that you use and how you structure your answers, that is important. So it doesn't matter how crazy your idea is, as long as you use good language and you show variety of language and you structure your answer in a coherent and well organized way.
That's fine. Tip number four when you're practicing before the exam, You should ask your friend to give some different opinions to your opinion. And then you should say whether you agree with them, or whether you disagree with them. It's really good practice because you're going to be with another candidate in this exam. It's really good practice to, to agree with somebody or disagree with somebody in a conversation. And then give a reason why.
So I agree with you because I disagree with you for this reason. For example, I completely agree with you. So if somebody Yeah, somebody gives their opinion, you can say, I completely agree with you because or I'm sorry, I don't agree with you. Or I'm sorry. I don't agree with that at all. Because then you're saying that you don't agree.
So you're giving your opinion at all. Which is quite strong, I strongly disagree. Because that leads you on giving a justification or reasoning. Okay, so here's some useful language for you to use in this part of the exam. Giving your opinion you can say, Hmm, that's a good question. Well, okay.
And by saying something like this, it also gives you a bit of time to think about what you're going to say, which could be quite useful. If you say that's a good question. gives you two or three seconds to think about what you can say. And that's a good little tip as an extra tip for you. So you can say this is a good question. Well, I think that could also say, I feel that mobile phones are good.
That's giving your opinion. Then I'd go on Give my reasons or another opinion, it is my belief that or you can say, I tend to think that these will vary type of phrases you use, they can vary depending on how strong or not strong your opinion is. Here's the reasoning port, because evidence shows that, okay, that's quite strong justification. Because in my experience, so you could say, for example, it's my belief that mobile phones really are not good for for society, because in my experience, it stops people from speaking to each other. You get onto a bus for example, you can see 10 different people and they're all Looking at their mobile phone, and no one is speaking to each other. Just an example.
Could also say this justify your opinion could say, I feel that that has every time I, for example, I feel that television is it's really quite a quite an enjoyable activity that you can partake in with other people. As every time I watch television with someone else. I feel like a better connection with that person. We can talk about television, took my watch, etc. Okay, so let's practice this. What I want you to do is to pause this video and find another person.
Well, you can do it after the lesson if you want as a homework exercise, but there are some questions here, which again, you can find from this website. If you go to page 84 Okay, Cambridge English advanced handbook for teachers and look at these questions. What I want you to do is to focus on answering the question and giving reasons what you could even do before you speak with another person, you could actually write down answers to these questions for homework, that would be a good exercise as well. But yeah, you should also focus on using some of the useful language from the previous slide. And thinking about other useful language you can use. You get a good course book, which I recommended in the first lesson in this series.
Yeah, but a good course book will have lots of useful language in there, as well. Okay, so for homework, you should write down some questions, which were associated to your topic from Part Three from the last lesson. And you should also write down some answers. With opinions about the concentrating on the language that you use. So take a topic Part Three topic, your prompt, and then write down some questions that you can use which could be similar to a part for exercise show related to the topic questions in part three. And then you should practice saying these, your opinions and your justifications and answering these questions.
You should practice this with a friend and get them to give you feedback. Get them to tell you how can you improve, how can you make these answers better? Okay, so the examples that we've seen in this lesson, I've come from either myself, or they've come from the Cambridge English advanced teachers Handbook, you can access from this website here.
