Hello everybody. Welcome to the C one advanced ca writing paper video course. In this video lesson, we're going to be focusing on Part Two the reviews. So, we will look at an example review question. We will look at some advice for writing reviews will critique the review answer. We will then look at some examiners critique of a review answer.
We will correct the mistakes from this review. Then we will look at some more general tips for writing a review. So here is an example review question. This has come from the Cambridge English advanced handbook for teachers and it says, you see the following announcement on our website, great lives, reviews wanted. Send us a review of a book or film that focuses on somebody who has made an important contribution to society. Did you learn anything new about the person's life from the book or film?
Did the book or film help you understand why this person made their important contribution? Write your review. And as I suggested in an earlier video, you have 90 minutes for the writing paper. So I suggest spending 45 minutes on part one, and 45 minutes on part two. So if you spend 45 minutes on your review, you should take five minutes to plan your answer. 35 minutes to write your answer, five minutes to check through your work at the end.
Let's look at some more general advice which is also come from the Cambridge English advanced handbook for teachers. It says a review maybe about a book, magazine, film, play book concept. It may also be about a product or a service. Review in the Cambridge English advanced writing paper does not merely ask for for a general description of the thing reviewed but requires an evaluation of its suitability for a particular purpose audience. So you don't just need to describe you also need to Evaluate. And you need to evaluate whether it's suitable for a certain type of people specific audience or for a specific purpose.
So in this writing a review, you will need to use some language that you can. So when you review, you need to use language and evaluation. Okay. We'll look at some more advice a bit later. But for now, I would like you to have a look at this example answer. It'll be easier for you to read it on the internet.
So if you type in this web address here, into your internet browser, for example, good Chrome or Mozilla Firefox or Safari and turn to page 42. You will see this example answer. So pause this video now and type in this web address when you've turned to page 42 continue watching this video. Okay, so hopefully you've done that. And I asked you to ignore the examiner comments for now, because we will look at those later. But what I'd like you to do is to have a read of this example answer here.
And at the same time, I'm going to ask you to complete this table. So you should pause this video now and copy this table onto a sheet of paper. When you've done that, press play. Okay, so hopefully you've done that. And now what I'd like you to do is to read this question here to complete this table, giving each of the four subscales content communicative achievement, organization and language, a mark from one to five, one being bad and five being good. So if you think that the content is really, really good, then you have to give it to five and then write your comments for why Now while you were doing this or before you do this, you should remind yourself about what the examiners are looking for, for each of these four criteria.
And there is a video in this course earlier on, on marking criteria, where I tell you what the examiners are looking for in terms of content, then you know whether it meets these targets or not. So for example, content could include, does it address all the parts of the question? Is it appropriate for the target audience, etc. So have a look at my earlier video lesson on marking criteria. If you can't remember what each of these four categories involves, and then read this example review and to complete the table with your marks and your comments. So pause this video now, complete the table.
And when you've done that, press play. Okay, so hopefully you've done that. And hopefully you have a table on a sheet of paper with lots of marks and comments on it. Now what we can do is we can look at a real examiners comments about this review. So here on this page, we have some real examiner comments about this review. What I'd like you to do now is to pause this They do have a read of these comments might be easier for you to find them on page 42 Cambridge English advanced handbook features that you can access at this website.
So I want you to compare these comments and these marks with your comments and your marks. See if they're similar or different. Doesn't matter if they're different. The important part of this exercise is to read these comments in detail, so you know what the examiners are looking for. And now marking your review. And while you're doing this, you should make note of the most important point in these comments.
So pause this video now. compare these comments and mark your own. When you've read them in detail, press play Okay, so hopefully you've done that. Now what we're going to do is have a look at some of the most important parts of these comments, which I underlined. So firstly, content which has got five out of five, that's top marks, because all of the content is relevant. communicative achievement, they use descriptive language, which is good for you.
And they have some straightforward ideas and more complicated ideas. It's well organized and easy to follow. And the writer uses a range of vocabulary along with some simple and complex grammatical forms together. Okay. But when I was reading this review, I noticed there were some mistakes the language. This could be grammatical mistakes, spelling mistakes, or that it's difficult to understand the sentence.
So I would like you to pause this video now. Read these sentences here and try to correct the mistakes in each sentence. When you've done that, press play Okay, so hopefully you've done that. Now what we can do is have a look at the corrections. So in the first sentence, actors and actresses are plural, so we shouldn't use the article and before the next sentence, this is not a comparison. So we shouldn't say as well as we should just say as well, because it means In addition, also, it's not a comparison, so don't use the second as the third sentence volunteers spelt incorrectly.
The next sentence considered spelt incorrectly. achieved is spelt incorrectly the next one doesn't is spelled incorrectly and the one after that. And if it doesn't, then it should be photographs with an S plural. About two spoke correctly, the next one, and probably spoke correct incorrectly in the final one. So lots of spelling mistakes. If you read over your work, these are the type of mistakes that you can find incorrect.
And that is why reading of your work is so important because you can save yourself lots of marks in the exam, and it will help to make the examiner think more positively about you and your work which will be really good for you So some final points about writing a review. The language that you use should be informal and first person is fine. Because you're giving your own opinion and you're trying to persuade, so you should use language of persuasion and evaluation. So first person is fine. And you're trying to evaluate something, your own perspective. Does the writer ask the reader questions?
Yes, he does. That's a good thing to do to keep your audience engaged for review. ask them the question. What's the best film you've ever seen? The best film I ever saw was this film, and then talk about the film. For example.
And also giving a recommendation is really good for review should make recommendation. There aren't paragraphs in this example. But paragraphs are good. They suggest using paragraphs. You should also give your review a title at the top to make it catchy and interesting for the reader. And you can write positive things about something first and then the negative things after that's quite good.
It's a good structure to follow when writing review. Okay, so for homework, you should write your own answer, either to the review question from this lesson. Or you can find a different review question. If you type in this website, in your internet browser, If you write your answer on computer, you can send it to me the questions at student languages COMM And if I have time, I will mark this for you and giving you feedback based on the official marking criteria.
