Now it's time to learn some tunes in the key of E. And the first one we're going to look at is a song called Groundhog Day blues by a little son Jackson. It's in the key of F if you listen to the original recording, and what you can do is put a capo on the first fret and we'll talk about this at the end of this lesson series how to use the capo. But for now, we're going to play it in the key of E since the song is basically played in the position. So I'll play a little bit of Groundhog Day blues for you, and then we'll break it down and figure out how to play So there's a little bit of Groundhog Day blues by little son Jackson. It's a very simple song, chord wise and we're in the key of E now. And so in all of these songs all five of these songs we're going to look at, we're going to see three chords.
And the first chord is going to be your E major, we may see a nice Seventh in there from time to time, but he and then we're going to have an A, which in the case of Groundhog Day blues isn't a seventh. Then we're going to have a partial B seventh chord. And we're putting really everything that we have in a B seventh chord down except for the pinky on the first string at the second fret. So normally we play a B seventh like this. And in Groundhog Day, right, Groundhog Day blues if you listen to it carefully, you're just gonna hear the low end of it. So that is a B, seventh chord.
And that's really all you need. As far as the bass goes. It's a monotonic bass. So when we play over the E chord, we're going to be thumped in the open sixth string with our right hand thumb. When we get over the a seven, we're going to be hitting the Open fifth string. And then when we get to the B seven, we're going to get the second fret of the fifth string, which is fret of this part of the B, seventh chord.
And that's really all you have in Groundhog Day blues. Now there is a solo, which I will teach you. And there are some single string runs that are a little complicated in in places, but really not all that hard. And so what I showed you here at the beginning was what I call a simplified, or bare bones version of the tune. And we'll learn that first, along with the introduction, and then we'll work on the solo and I'll show you how to play some of those really cool single string runs that you hear in the original recording. And I'll show you the syntax which is really kind of neat, too.
