The introduction and first verse of lightnin Hopkins instrumental in the QE and he's Boogie is very straightforward. And I think the easiest way to teach each verse is to just show you what I'm playing over each chord. The bass throughout is the monotonic bass. And when we play over the E, we're thumping on the open sixth string muted with our right hand, Paul. When we get over the A, we're dumping on the open fifth string, and when we get to the B seven, we're playing the fifth string fretted at the second fret within the structure of the B seven chord. So to start out the song he plays this little Raph starts with the the bass string So all I'm doing here is I'm up stroking with my right hand with my first finger, three times 123.
Then I'm taking my ring finger and putting it on and off the second fret of the second string, but when I pick it, I'm also going into open for strength. So I've got this and you hear the bass thumping along, then he's gonna go into this little single string right. What I'm doing there is keeping the E structure with my first and second fingers that I'm using my third finger because it's stronger. You can use your pinky with the ring finger if you want but I'm using my ring finger and just bringing it from the third to the second fret. Open on the second string that I'm taking that same finger and putting it on the second fret of the third string hammering onto the first fret of the third string with my first finger and then getting the E note which is the second fret of the fourth string.
So without the bass, that whole little run single string round goes like this. Right there. So let me play that first part with the bass now. Right about there, we're gonna switch over to the A. And what I'm doing is just thumping on the open fifth string, and I'm gonna lead in with the second on my left hand with the a seventh chord. I'm just gonna keep it there.
And I'm gonna pick the second string. Then I'm going to take my ring finger off, and put my second finger on the second fret of the first string. Go back. We've done this before and Mojo hands so we've got this right here is pull off. So it's like that. If you listen to lightning Hopkins's live version or not the live version, but just the recorded version of this, you can hear that pull off right there.
So, so far first verse of Annie's Boogie, we've got this and then we're going to go into this. So what we're doing is I'm pitching the open six, and the second string which is open again in the open first string with another pants Another pull off, I'm sliding here, from the third to the fifth fret on the second string, but I'm getting the open first string. And the second time I do it, I'm pulling off the third fret of the second or Yeah, third fret of the second string. So let's watch that riff slowly. Let's take it from the from the A. We're gonna go to the beach.
And we're just playing the bass on the fifth string. And I'm picking the second string and just upstroke in with my first finger. All the while holding the B seventh chord shape. And then we're going to do this little turnaround thing. What I'm doing is really playing right over that ASAP. Of course, doubling up some strings in there by using that a seventh structure, we got this.
Just play around with that a little bit, you'll get that and then right away. So that quick, seven slide, this is an E seven. So I'm sliding, cut my first finger on the second fret of the second string, ring finger or a second finger on the third fret of the third string. I'm sliding the second string check the tab on this one more time from the B seven. My turnaround is just the beast, of course. Let me play the first verse of lightning hops.
Andy's Boogie helped play the slice I can't I always say I'm gonna play it slow and then I, I get going. So anyway, here we will try this again. And there we have verse number one. Now as we get into the next verses, eventually we'll come back at the very end of the song and we'll play the last verse is very similar to the first verse, almost the same thing, couple minor variations. So we'll come back to that again later. So get that first verse down, and then you're ready to move on to the boogie woogie bass runs which is the beginning of the fun with the song
