In this video, let's talk about a positive emotion, managing enthusiasm, which is one of the most desired emotions in you in the people that you hire or the people that you manage. Because it's very conducive to do amazing work. Before we get into how to get enthusiasm, let's actually identify that it's not all good, because the bad part of enthusiasm is it can cause you to be a little bit overly optimistic and overestimate success and overestimate outcomes. And so it can make a meeting mediocre ideas seem great. We've all met that new intrapreneur who thought that their idea was so amazing, where it was really the most basic idea but they were just so enthusiastic about it that it caused them to think it's a billion dollar idea, but really, it's just regular all commoditized idea that many people have had before. So enthusiasm can actually leave you astray if there's too much, but you have to manage it.
Okay, manage it the same way acknowledge it. Think through it. It's all the same, you acknowledge the emotion focus on it. Think about the causes. Is it rational? I your ideas about it being distorted, or are they realistic.
And then after you think about it a little bit, it comes into frame it becomes more realistic and nuanced. And so you can make rational good decisions about everything. So, but never nevertheless, it's actually a very, very, very good emotion to have, especially for your workers and employees. So people you lead, you want them to be enthusiastic about the work, right? Not like the things we're talking about before not the fear, not the anxiety, not the dejection, you want them to have enthusiasm. How do you get it?
First of all, you want to give people meaningful and challenging work. They like doing that. Also, the meaningful part is very important because it's not just the challenging work, the work has to be challenging to their level, not too much, not too little. Because if it's too much, it becomes overwhelming. And if it's too little is boring, but the outcome has to be meaningful as well. If it's an employee, they can be working towards a raise, they can be working towards that next position, if they can be learning a skill that's going to help them in career and you have to get you know, use the empathy skills to get to really understand what makes our employees tick, and how to get them from not caring to carrying from being dejected, back into the mode of being enthusiastic.
So you have to know each of your employees and each one will require a slightly different approach because they're their own human being. They have their own things that are important for them and not important for them. And also, it's very good to use humor and also it's very good in all situations, because it just makes things nicer and work environment more pleasant, but it's also very good to allow room for imagination. Not only is imagination good for creativity, imagination is also very, very good for getting people to imagine how good their life will be after they've done the work. And they have the meaningful outcome that they're like, fast forward a year or two later, and they have achieved the outcome. Maybe they've gotten the raise, maybe they're making more money, maybe their careers events, whatever it is, when they imagine and Daydream they can see themselves Two years later, reaping the benefits of all the hard work, and that will get them very enthusiastic about working, because that's the working is the way to get to that point two years later and seeing it and visualizing it will really help them to want to get there now Sometimes that's the lesson help.
Sometimes you know what you want to accomplish, you know how great things will be, but it just doesn't feel that great to embark on a project. The reasons for that can often be that the project might be a little big and daunting, it helps to break it up into many steps. So if you have an employee who may be disinterested, we can tap into them. Maybe the project is overwhelming them. And you have to break the project up to reasonable steps for them. And in each step, you might identify the daunting elements that in your mind are simple because you're leading them, but in their mind, they have no idea it's like a black hole.
And that lack of knowledge, lack of ability, really, really kills their motivation and confidence for the work and because they'll have those negative, they'll feel a little dejected. So to raking the project up into little pieces will help you identify where they're not confident and solve that so that they have no barriers in the execution. And if they do have barriers, there are small ones and fixable ones. And if it's you that doesn't have the enthusiasm. You can also do the same things like work with a coach, get your support group, your peers, your friends, and maybe learn a skill or outsource a skill that maybe you cannot do well yourself. That is preventing you from being enthusiastic about this project from seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
And with a little bit of help, you'll be able to get over the hump and get to success with your project. So that can often help you get from not enthusiastic and maybe feeling a little iffy about what you're about to do to feeling enthusiastic. If everything fits and the project is doable. It's within you your abilities. And if something is not within your abilities, then somebody having somebody who can help you. That's going to be the last part you need.
And lastly, if it's issues still can get enthusiastic about it. What maybe is happening is you have too many things to do. And before you embark on that project, you just want to clear off your low hanging fruit things from out of your to do list so that you're able to focus on your project. And if that still doesn't get you going, you can use the list of short term motivation techniques we covered earlier in the course. And that should get you short term motivated and enthusiastic and get you ready for optimal work.
