If you are a woman trying to improve your public speaking, I do have good news for you. Here's no one says this. But here's the reality. Most men who give speeches and presentations are awful. They're boring. So it really doesn't take that much to really stand out as I caught up up.
And it's not just men, men, women, everyone who gives business speeches, presentations, whether it's for nonprofits, for government or for the private sector. For the most part, they're not very good. Why? Because everybody makes the same mistakes. They do data dumps, they read, they have PowerPoint with lots of bullet points. Most speakers everywhere are awful, which means you can really stand out as great just by not being as awful and as boring as most men aren't as most other speakers are.
Now, I am going to address some specific things that are unique to Women in public speaking. But I will say up front, I think what makes a woman a great speaker is quite often the same thing that makes a man a great speaker. And it's rare. It's rare in both sexes. And the rare thing is saying something interesting and memorable to the audience, I want you to focus on that the things that make speakers great and interesting and memorable, are much more specific to both sexes than they are different for the sexes. So please, please keep that in mind.
We will of course deal with some issues that are gender specific, but your first goal should be not to sort of compensate for being a woman or to do something different. But to look at what everyone else is doing the men and women you know, giving speeches, and don't do it like that, because most Speakers just give boring data dumps. Thanks for joining me. Let's hop right in with the first lesson.
