So we're coming to the conclusion of this media training course for beginners, but I do want to let you know something. Dealing with the media Learning Media skills is far different from say golf skills or violin skills or basketball skills where there's so many gradations up to college level professional level. Media skills are different some ways it's much simpler. Because the bottom line is is did you get the quote you want on the message you want in the final story? If you can say yes to that, well, you're now a professional because the professionals don't do any better than this. So you might not have done many interviews in your life.
In fact, you may not have ever done an interview. But if you follow the principles in this course, you can get the message you want in that newspaper on that website, on that broadcast. In that podcast, you can get them message you want to cross, and you can get the quote or the soundbite, you want. If you do that, that's great means you're no longer a beginner. And if you just practice a little, you're going to find that this whole process gets easier and easier. It's less tension, Phil.
Now the first time you do an interview, you're going to be nervous, you're going to be scared. I understand that. That's why I urge you have a cheat sheet. be looking at your message points and your soundbites on a single sheet. If it's a TV interview, we'll be looking at it before the interview starts. But have that cheat sheet it's really going to make life much much easier for you.
And you won't have to think because it's going to be hard to think in an interview. When you haven't done many. Your body's telling you runaway adrenaline is pumping through your body. So you're not going to be able to think as well. You're not going to have recall me As well, and that's why it's crucial to have that one pager in front of you. And it's also why it's so important to practice.
Now, I practice with presidents of countries, people who've done thousands of interviews, you never get too old to practice in the same way. Professional Baseball players or professional ice skaters still practice their sport every day. You want to be great at the media and go from beginner to intermediate to advanced practice, practice on video. And look at every single video you do. Look at every interview you do try to capture it on video and learn from that. If you keep doing that, you'll get a little bit better every time.
The problem many executives have is they do media interviews, but they never learn from it. So their performance skills are up and down and it's somehow dependent on whether they were having a good day. Or they like the reporter all these nonsense issues. You've got to get to the point where you have a plan for every interview you do. And you practice it and then you execute it when you're in the interview. Do that and you're going to be in great shape.
Thanks for joining me for this beginners course. Again, the books are below if you want to learn more about media training, and I have a number of advanced classes too. I hope to see you again soon. Good luck with your interviews.
