Many productive people commute. You can be a productive person and commute for hours each day. The key is using the time productively. So many people start a commute and they just are reading random news about celebrities sports, whether next thing you know, 45 minutes are gone. And then the rest of the time checking up on a few friends on Facebook and a few things and nothing productive happened. There may be times when you want sure relaxation.
There's nothing wrong with reading a little bit of news on your commute or reading a novel for that matter. But make sure it is purposeful. And if you have a busy day or in the middle of a busy project, use every second of your time productively. Don't use this time to just look at news sites and celebrity sites, gossip sites instead. Focus on what's really important. You got an hour commute you may decide let me Spent 15 highly concentrated minutes, going through my email, making sure it's all done.
Let me type up an important memo that's due tomorrow. Focus on things that are really important, it can be a great time to do this lifelong learning on a daily basis I've been talking about go deep, really immerse yourself in books on your area of expertise, subjects you care about, or completely new subjects personally if I'm commuting, and I don't have a daily commute, but when I do commute to some sort of a gig, I like to immerse myself in deep reading deep thought and reflection on new ideas. That may be the best time so don't look at a community as all wasted time. Look at it as a time to do something productive now. If you are driving that's a little different. Obviously you can't be reading but you can be listening to a podcast Cast for an audio book, rather than just top 40 radio or sports radio or news talk radio which is complete destroyer a productivity waste of time and for that matter will rot your brain most likely.
So whatever format your commute takes, walking, riding a train, bus plane, or driving, figure out a medium that works for you and spend that time either creating by writing new documents or dictating, or at least by consuming new information in a way that's truly helpful and enriching to yourself as a person and your career and not just mindless garbage. Unless you've specifically decided today I want to consume mindless garbage because that's my form of entertainment. be purposeful and your commute. Doesn't have to be a huge time. Suck. destroying your productivity it can be a part of an overall productive day.
