What is the fastest way of becoming an expert in your field if you're not already an expert? Well, times have changed since I started out of this industry, it's now easier than ever before. The first place, the easiest place I suggest, get an account in Amazon, get an unlimited account. This gives you up to 10 books you can check out at any time during their unlimited program. And just check out every single book in your area of expertise. So for example, let's say it's yoga.
If you just look at yoga books that are available on the Kindle unlimited platform, there are more than 5000 books and what this means is for basically 10 bucks a month. You can download and read 10 books at a time so you could quickly read hundreds and hundreds of books in one day. month for 10 bucks. I'm telling you in the history of humankind, there's never been anything like that where you could gain so much knowledge. I mean, you could go to the best libraries in the world, they're not going to have 300 or 500 books in your subject area, they just don't stop that many, these are lots and lots of books, some of them might not be that good. Some of them might be really short.
But they're all important to you to get a sense of the landscape of your industry to get a sense of what else is out there, what your competitors are up to. So unless you have and I don't mean to sound dismissive of this, but unless you have some form of a reading disability, I frankly cannot think of any excuse you have for not reading massively. If not every book in your niche, then at least hundreds of them. I know if I type in public speaking on Amazon, some 11,000 books come up now I haven't read 11,000 books on public speaking. But I guarantee you I've read all our parts of more than 1000 books, I certainly try to read everything that gets a lot of attention or that's been around or a new books that come out or books from friendly competitors. And certainly when I started this whole industry, this whole business of mine, I just went to the library.
It was the downtown business library, the Midtown Business Library in Manhattan. And I just checked out every single book I could find on anything to do with public speaking presentation skills, media training. So that's a free education are virtually free and if you have any kind of computer access, even a cell phone and $10 you can get tremendous wealth of knowledge there. And once you do this for two months or three months, that's 30 bucks. Now, as I mentioned to you and I started off my business, I had like 400 bucks to my name, but I still could have come up with 10 bucks for something this thorough. I'm always amazed by people who tell me they're an expert on something.
They're now doing freelancing, that particular subject. I asked them about a book that's on the bestseller list or someone well known in their industry. They're like, Oh, I haven't heard of that. Like, you can't be held accountable for every single subject matter expert in your field or every single book, but the big ones, the main ones, the ones people are talking about once that have popped up in popular culture, you got to be on top of that. You got to be all over that. So that's my recommendation on your first primary source.
The thing I like about print is it's it's just so much Faster. Even if you're a relatively slow reader, you're going to read faster than watching a video or listening to a podcast. Those are both great methods to I'll talk about in a moment.
